Butterfield breaks Ascot 250 Juniors By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, JULY 20 The half-mile oval which serves as the pit area for the Ascot Motocross was almost filled completely as many "riders were prac.ticing for the upcoming summer series. There were 14 events on the program lOnight with many classses having two divisions. The 25OccJunior class had 2~ riders and on this tight nighttime track it was best lo divide them up into twO divisions. New lo southern California and residing in Costa Mesa, Brett Butterfield became the winning rider in the first division of 250cc Junior com petition. The new set of double jumps were only cleared by Pro riders and others who had a lot of guts. The 250cc Junior riders weren't up to clearing the jumps with the exception of one, and that was Butterfield. At first he was hesitant, but soon it became a breeze for him. This helped Butterfield to maintain a good lead during the first moto in front of Cory Gash, Steve Margeson and Bret Johnson. Butterfield ended up winning the final mow, yet he started out in third place. Corey Gash had the early lead, but dropped his Yamaha on the second turn. Johnson took over the lead, with Butterfield running in second. Butterfield was in line for the overall win whether or not he passed Johnson, bu.t Butterfield decided lO make ita clear victory as he passed Johnson by holding on the gas and clearing the new set of jumps. Johnson was demo.ted to second place in a split second. Margeson was once again in third place. Two firsts won Butterfield the top brass and he should do well in the summer series. Johnson's 4-2 tally earned him second place on the trophy list over Margeson and Jeff Smith. Ken Garnica won the second division of 250cc Junior racing with a clean first-mow win while the final mow was more difficult. Garnica took the holeshot in the opening moto and led Sean Mitchell. Lance DeLong placed third ahead of Jeff VanEss. Trey McFarlane (482) and Arthur Huffer (41) start at Ascot. DeLong had the lead in the final mow, with Garnica right behind him. They came lO the new se.t of jumps and Garnica held on the throttle and £lew further lO take over the lead. While in the lead, Garnica dropped his bike on the small corner before the TT jump but didn't lose his position. Overall it was Garnica, DeLong, Mike Denham, Mitchell and VanEss. • Results BO JR DIV 1: 1. Scott McDonough (Kaw); 2. Troy Cline (Hon); 3. Robert Nickolson (Hon). BO JR DIV 2: 1. A THREE-WHEELER FOR ALL REASONS Nearly a decade and a half ago, Honda "invented" three wheeling with the ATe-. We've been leading the way ever since. For 1984, the ATe- line has been further refined and has grown even larger, ensuring that there's a machine for every type of activity whether irs recreational, utility, all-out racing or a convenient blend. There's also a Honda ATe- for every level of riding ability from beginner to pro. So, if you're thinking threewheeling, you needn't think any further than ATc-s. You see, Honda just doesn't know how to rest on its laurels. *•••*.*********** ***************** ttl, KJtt'% AND SON MOTORCYCLES, INC.
