Keller, Toreson, Nelson nab Clarks Branch wins By Suanne L. Ught ROSEBURG, OR, JULY 17 PhillJlrson flie. through a Southfork corner on hi. way to the Open win. Anderson, Larson dominate Southfork Gold,Cup By Brian Barnes YAKIMA, WA. JULY 17 Located in the heart of Washington's Yakima Valrey, Southfork Foothills MX Park was host to the eighth Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup race of 1983. With the largest spectator draw of the series looking on, Yamaha Support's Jim Anderson and factory Honda rider "Flyin' Phil" Larson put on a 32 tremendous display of riding, winning everything in sight. All three Pro classes had excellent turnouts with the 29-rider 250cc class being the largest and the fastest. At the start of malO one the Larson brothers. Phil and Mike, rounded turn one full bore. with Edwin Wickward, Gary Kuest and Anderson following.' After lap one it was clear who wou.ld go on to win the mota as Phil immediately put ground between himself and Mike. Anderson got by Wickard and chased the younger Larson for the next eight laps and then got past after an exciting duel. Despite Anderson's late charge, the leading Larson still had considerable ground between himself and Anderson at the checkered. Brother Mike finished a strong third. The second round found Anderson pulling a beautiful holeshot, with Joe Wright, Bob BuHaloe and both Larsons in a Honda freight train behind ~ ~.. .. • ~ ....... 4 -4 ... him. The Yamaha ace wasted no time and established a nice lead. Phil Larson. meanwhile, got past both Buffaloe and Wright to begin a comefrom-behind attempt to take away Anderson's lead. Nearly halfway into the race, however. a nat tire killed his chances. Anderson kept a very large margin of victory for the win and overall. Mike Larson and Bu{{aloe were both able 10 pass for second and third, with Phil Larson taking fourth. Anderson once ",gain dominated the l25s in both races, but in today's action some new names came up near the top. Dennis Ostriem. a local favorite in the Yakima area, impressed the folks by taking second overall via a 6-2 performance. Three other riders also wound up with a total of eight points. Edwin Wickward surprised with a 5-3 for third, Yamhill Yamaha's Doug Lange scored a 3-5 for fourth and Ted Holt, from Country Yamaha in Oregon, took fifth after a 2-6 score. All eyes were glued to the start area when the Open class came oH the line, and up front again were the Lar- KTM-supported Rodney Keller clobbered the 250cc Pro class at Clarks Branch Raceway in AMA ummer series action. Honda rider Randy Toreson topped the Open Pro class and Yamaha/Honda of Roseburg rider Steve Nelson landed the I 25cc Pro laurels. Keller launched his KTM o{{ the line in an "all-in-one" Pro contest gating some very fine talent on 125, 250cc and Open machinery. A few years back Keller was considered by many to be the "Magoo" of Oregon, but has since mellowed out with "age" and at 17 is considered by many 10 be one of Oregon's brightest hopes. Keller led Rick Bault, Tore on, Rick Gunderson and Nelon at the drop of the gate and into loamy tum one. Keller rides the rough tracks very well and quickly ned the contact that was being made by Bault and Toreson in what resembled a destruction derby. After the dust and smoke settled. it was Keller with the win and Bault topping Toreson for second. Keller was back out front in mota two and left an unpassable dust screen that slowed thefollowingriders. Toreson did manage to give Keller a run for the money, but Keller was not to be denied, taking a I-I blitz LO the pay window over Toreson, who, despite a second, still topped the Open Pro's by beating Honda Support rider Steve Williams. Nelson topped Gunderson in mota two, which determined the outcome and gave Nelson the overall with a 2-1. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Rlndy TOrllOn (Hon); 2. Steve Willilrns (Hon); 3. Hess and fellow local rider Camp are no slouches, but couldn't make a pass stick, which gave Ziebler his fourth maLO win of the day; Hess was second, Camp third. Short track racing was packed with action which saw heat winner MaJ1c Lenhardt put a Yamaha into the lead at the start of the Open A main event. Lenhardt didn't have it as easy as he did last race and was hounded by AMA Junior Keith Satre, also on a Yamaha, and young Brian Thomas. Thomas kept the AMA Pros in sight, but had to settle for a third place on his Billings Honda. Lenhardt took the majority of the race to overcome Satre's driving advances for the win. Satre LOpped the 250cc heat races and came back 10 lead Lenhardt and Troy Dunlap. Lenhardt put his 250 Honda into the lead shortly thereafter and blitzed to the checkered flag for a double o( his own over Satte, who had to be content with finishing second in both Open and 250cc A main events.
