World Champ-ionship500cc MX Series: Round 8 French GP to Malherbe By Neil Webster IFFENDlCH, FRANCE, JULY 3 Honda's Andre Malberbeopened up a three-poinr lead in the 500cc GP point standings with a 1-2 ride in the French GP 26 which lOok. place at Iffendich in Brillany. Previous point leader, Swedish Yamaha rider Hakan Carlqvist was the star of the show as he took second in the second malO while suffering great pain from a broken rib. "I fell in practice and broke a rib and hurt my back," said Carlqvist. "In the second race I could hardly breathe and could not sit down. For the last few laps I just had to shut off my brain and go as fast as I could." Carlqvist's last gasp effort just missed as he trailed Malherbe over the line by yards. He had held a 12second lead before the pain started to get the beller of him. Carlqvist could have won the first leg, but for a rear lire puncture while he was at the from after five laps. Another victim of the puncture epedemic on the sun-baked stony track near Rennes was Graham Noyce. Still in with a chance at the title until lhe French round, Noyce collecled a front tire puncture in the first molO while fighting back from a bad start, but still kept up his challenge until a rear flat made his task impossi ble. The race was then between Malherbe and Carlqvist, and then with the Swede also being put out with a puncture, Belgian ace Malhcrbe had it all 10 go for. Slow orr the stan, Malherbe suddenly realized every point he could get was vital and he launched a second half rally. Pulling quickly through the lOp five, only teammate Dave Thorpe separated him from second Spot with four laps 10 go, as Suzuki's Harry Everts held a clear lead. But then Thorpe, for the second time in twO GPs, got signs from the japanese team boss, Mr. SalO, 10 let Malherbe through. As the pair approached the line, Tborpe shut off to give Malherbe second. Fortune was again with the Belgian in race two as Noyce and Carlqvist fell back and once more Malherbe built up from a slow start -ninth on lap one-to pick off the leaders until he held the lead. Carlqvist closed rapidly in the last minutes, but Malherbe claimed he had it all under control. "I knew where he was and just did what I had 10 do," said Malherbe. Californian Gary Semics, sevemh in last year's series~ had another disappointing ride, taking away only one poim from the second molO where he finished 10th on his production Honda after a strong ride through the pack. Semics now holds 17th place in this year's series with just II points. e Results 1ST MOTa: ,. H. E.ert. (SUl): 2. A. Malhe'be (Hon); 3. D. Tho,pe (Hon): 4. A. The International Track was modified to encompass a series of switchbacks in the sandwash to the delight of john Parks aboard an Answer YZ250 and john Kitcko, Suzuki Van Nuysmounted. These two hotshot racers diced constantly with first moto winner Ron Vanderziel's Honda applying all the pressure he could muster. Completing the first four was a determined Charles Abbitt, who sn uck into third ahead of Kitcko in the closing moments of the mota. Mota two of the 250cc Beginners gave no real indication of the fierce inner battles until mid-way when the first-mota winner dropped out and evemually DNF. johnnie-on-the-spot john Parks assumed and stretched his new lead to the checker ahead of Kitcko, moving ·rapidly into second, and Vance Lorenzana, in third up from nimh.
