Ferren holds on for IMS win By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 20 "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell fought off the persistent challenges of Alan "Crazy" Christian to win the Sratch main for the first time in 1983 at Inland Motorcycle Speedway. Ferrell (Cody Prod!Jcts/Vera's/ ~TP).drew the pole and led the open~g CirCUli on his factory Jawa. Sam umolenko was second out of the gate and stayed in that spot until ;\lan Christian pressured him com109 out of turn four on the opener. Ermolenko swung wide, hi t the crashwall, ~here his bike stopped dead, throwmg Ermolenko over the wall in true "Clark Kent" fashion. Miraculously, Ermolenko hopped right up ahd began the long, depressing walk back to the pits. John Cook went down on lap two leaving Christian as Ferrell's only cllallenger. The "Big Fella" continually tried to muscle his way by on the inside, only to have Ferrell repulse every chaJlenge, to take a hard-earned victory on a big-paycheck night. Cook charged across the line with the leaders, but forthe second week in a row he was a lap down. ' It is sad to report that as Cook rode through the pit gate after the main, he was pulled 0[£ his bike and was then beaten and kicked by two riders -who bad failed to make the main. Fortunately Cook was only shaken ~y this disgusting act of violence. Mike Mazzacane (Parts Plus/Oakley/Hair by Bev Jaw) came in as a reserve and backed up his big night Saturday at Ridgecrest by bagging the Handicap main from the zeroyard line. Last week's winner Dennis Briggs. came off the 10 a~d challenged over the first two circuits until Mazzacane pulled away. Rob Pfelling. off the 20, got by Greg Ayers for third on lap one and slowly chopped away at the distance between himself and second-place Briggs. Pfelling pulled even with Briggs twice on the final lap. but fell inches short at the line and was forced to settle for third. The ecstatic Mazzacane took the triumph by three lengths. "Canadien Express" Ken Hansen (Johar/MXL Godd) went wire to wire from the 10 to take his first IMS Sec0!1d Division main of the year. On the f~rst lap, Ha!1sen had to fight off Robm BourgeoIS, who was making his first appearance of the season. Ed Castro took Bourgeois for second on lap four, with Scott Talkington also scooting by for third on the same lap. It proved to be too late for Castro and Talkington, as Hansen took his first win by a big margin. Results SCRATCH MAIN: I. Dubl> F.rr./I (J.w); '2. AI.n -V_nra- Chrilli.n lGoddl; 3. Robinson shake up Nepa By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, JULY 16 John Cook made his first appearance at Napa in at least five years tonight and the fans will not soon forget it. Excelling, as usual, on the Scratch side of the program, he had a perfect score heading into the main event, where he drew the number two position. Out of the gate, Cook was into the lead between Ron McGill on the pole and Billy Meister in the number three spot. Duane Yarrow was wide on the outside, coming off the wall. Going into turn two, McGill somehow managed to hold everything together as he went a little out of control. Meister went down in turn three on the second lap, finishing his night at the races. On the third lap, Cook began his "Wheelie Finale" of the evening i~ a style that showed how he got the mckname "Cowboy" - front wheel in the air and one hand off the handlebars as he waved to the excited crowd, who watched in amazement. At the finish it was Cook, McGill and Yarrow. The Handicap main was also an exciting show. Cook, riding 0[( the 5.0-yard line, was able to gain a posilion on every lap, but at the same time, Rocky Robinson had turned on the fire and was at least half a straightaway ahead of the rest of the field. At the finish, Robinson put on a little wheelie demonstration of his own as he took the checkered flag, climaxing the fastest race of the evening. Cook was second, Harlan Bast Jr., was third. Once in a while a Division Three rider comes along who makes everyone sit up and take notice. Perry Sherman is one of those riders. He took his rider's test on July 9, and placed second in the main that same evening. He won the Division Three main at Aubuin July 15, as well as his heat, and did it again tonight, winning them both. It looks like Sherman is headed for Division Two. Mark Zeissler, also a promising newcomer, was second and Ross Eichelberger was third. Mark Dwyer and Kelly MOl1ln battle it out in San Bernardino action. SCRATCH MAIN: 1. John Cook; 2.
