..rulua·B -GIda 'I' dco-eolor ~•••4 ~~ ~ knows what will happen next year. Since the change to every Saturday night motocross. the only Saturday night motocross in north Texas. it looks like old times at Ross Downs with the pits full and the grandstands filling up. The speakers on the public address system had to be changed to meet the demands of the new crowds. Greg Harrison. the RD master. showed up and ran away with the 25Occevents. Oliver Billingsly finally got it going in the Open class and took home the gold after getting a face-first look at the track in practice. He said that he likes to get a good look at things. Steve Maiden led a crowded class of 200cc riders for the win in that class, while Mesquite's Ronnie Camp dusted off the competition in the 125cc Amateur confrontation in both motos. Lee Nee1 showed the way in the 80cc division, but newcomer Clint Carlton took the trophy in the 60cc class on his parent-sponsored machine. Tim Clement took his second win in three weeks in the 50cc automatic class. MotOcross racing will continue every Saturday night until the weather gets too cold. Turner maintains MRA point lead at Castle Rock RR By Joe Dey Photo by Dennis Scully CASTLE ROCK, CO, jULY 3 The Mountain Roadracing Association held its fifth race of the 1983 season at Castle Rock, Colorado. With only one roadrace to go at this great facility before it faces demolition, the racers and the fans ere keyed up. The thrills began in 860cc Production. From the green flag it was Aaron Turner aboard his GS750ES Suzuki. Turner set the pace for his 35 challengers to match. First to accept the gauntlet was Bruce Gibson and his Interceptor. On lap four Gibson's challenge fu1£iIIed its promise as the Honda slammed the door on the Suzuki in turn one. Gibson's fun faded on lap eight as Turner drafted him on the three-quarter mile straight. and slammed the same door Gibson had shut on him. Finishing first was Turner, Gibson second, and third went to Skeeter Jacobson (Hon). By the time the 600cc Superbike race came around, the Colorado fans had been spoiled by the best. Again. Turner grabbed the holeshot. Turner. on his green GPz550. was hounded by Ty Piz on a very hot. very trick RD400. Piz tolerated no foolishness from Turner and the lead bounced back and fonh. Newcomer Ray Bolte (GPz550) insened himse1£ into a surprisingly close third. On the sixth lap. Piz committed the sin of a missed shift, and Bolte bolted into second place. Dave Stevenson (GPz550) made a strong showing, overcoming Piz for third place, and the ink was set for the finish. Results BEG: ,. B•••ly; 2. R..... 450 MOD PROD: ,. Ron Piz; 2. LaCom.; 3. JUNE 25 Mother Nature held up the start of racing at Hillside Cycle Park in Boyd by dumping a small flood on the track shortl y before time for practice to start. It took the track engineer Gary Kidd a little while to get the clay dried out enough for the bikes to run, but when they did, the surface packed to a very hard, smooth groove. Scott Scherb came to win again, wrapping up two first place trophies, plus one money race win. Scherb earned his first trophy in the 250cc Junior shon track. breaking ahead of Willie McCoy into the turn and leading all the way to the checkered flag. McCoy was pressured by jack Yost for second. Yost carne back, however, on hi big Triumph to win the Open junior class ahead of James Huddleston and Ricky Isbell's revived Yamaha. The 250cc Senior shon track saw Kelly Johnson put his Spencerl Marrineaux Honda to the front early. but Shaun Stovall gave him no breathing room. Stovall finished less than a bikelenglh behind Johnson, while Johnson's teammate Dodd Dyson was almost on Stovall's rear wheel. The Open Senior shon track saw plenty of action, all of it behind leader Scherb. Jimmy Tarlton took the holeshol but missed a shift, letting Scherb pass, followed by Tubby Doston, Stovall and Mike George. Dotson got high on the second lap and Stovall and George moved by on the pole. The race finished with Scherb. Stovall and George in the first three slots. Veteran rider Jack A"ery led the Open Amateur TT into the first turn with Mike George in second and John Tucker in third. Gary Prochaska came out of the turn in fourth. but went to work on the leaders. He gained third by the end of the first lap, then second on the next and went into the lead on the third lap. Prochaska. riding a borrowed bike. then pulled away from the pack. The Open Senior TT final was another battle between Gary Kidd and Rusty Pattillo. with Pattillo coming out on top. Pattillo also gained a one-point margin over Kidd in the season point race. • Results SHORT TRACK 110: 1. Grog Toogue; 2. TimKoy; 3. SconWilli.ml. 80 JR: 1. Bill Richllrdl (Han); 2.
