There was a nostalgic day of racing at SaddJeback's Saturday motocross on July 16. The Veteran Expert class saw somewbat of a turnabout as three-time National Champion motocrosser Gary Jones rode a four-stroke to the win rather than a two-stroke. What was odd was that legendary thumper lover Chuck "Feets" Minert was second on a CR480 Honda two-stroke. Ex-everybody factory rider Marty Tripes won the 250cc Pro class while brother Mike Tripes took the Open class. Matarqde W........ t..rry HuH· _ made its debut on Los AngeIea Chennel4, KNBC, and the preliminary rlltings arll very encourllging. The show drew a 3 rating and an 11 share. That's pretty good when you consider that the heavily promoted USFL playoffs were on opposite Motorcycle W...., and they drew a 4 rating, while the only promotion of the Motorcycle Worfd kick-off appeared right here in Cycle N..... Huffman's show will continue to run on Saturday afternoons on Channel 4, with air times varying, so check the local listings uch week. The show also is playing In the Houston, Texas, a,.. on KRIV-TV. In the July 17 Overseas Final, the quarter-final round of the World Individual Speedway Championship, Americans Dennis Sigalos and Lance King qualified to go on to the next stage leading to the World Final. Englishman Phil Collins won the Bellevue, England, event with 12 points, followed by countryman Kenny Carter and New Zealand's Mitch Shirra, both with 11. Sigalos scored nine points after a fall in the first of his five heats, and King put together three seconds and two thirds fOt' eight points. American Shawn Moran is the reserve for the next round, the August 7 Intercontinental Final, after scoring seven points. The other American in the contest, Mike Faria, had difficulry adapting to the long, damp track and could only muster one point. Although Faria only scored one point, observer. were impreued by his showing. Swlndon. a team in the British Speedway League, sIgned the southern California speedway ater to a 1984 contract to rllce in England. Deer Valley Cycle Park in Phoenix, Arizona, will be running their first race at a new Supercross-type track inside their quarter-mile oval on Saturday, July 23. That race is the first in a three-race series to be held at the 2600-seat facility. The three-race championship will be for Supercross and flat track. The other dates are August 6 and 20.
