Bill Throckmorton LOpped the Open Imermediate, [ollowed by Ron Beardsley. TheOver-The-Hill-Gang, for riders 30 year of age and older. was the day's final evenl. The ovice division was won by "Rocket" Rodney Truman, Don Maynard won the Imermediate class, "Philthy" Phil Komenchuk was the Amateur winner and "Putt-Putt" Peter Dill LOpped the Expert class. run-off for second between Don Wilson and Jef[rey Harsha. Mickey Fay again blew the lid off the Expert main event, motoring away from Charlie Barkman. Novice aoion wa similar to many past races as Mike Lawrence dominated theentire night on his Honda. Castle Rock was also blessed with sunny weather LO end the miserable rain streak that cancelled last night'S Clackamas TT and five of six previous races at Castle Rock. • With all the jumping going on at the start of the Junior main the two favorites for the win sat in the penalty grid. Harsha and Don Bennett got a decent view of the race in the early sta~es, seeing Dan Cordell, Gerrard and Ellis Cookman shoot off the line at the green light. Bennett rode in fifth on the opening lap, then moved to second, but his ride didn't last [or long. Just as soon as Bennett got by Gerrard for the lead, he did a nasty nose dive off the TT jump and was destined for spectator status for the rest of the evening. Gerard was having a field day up front on his 7S0 while Harsha's SOO revved it's heart out in search of a faster line, still holding back a Wilson/Harry Thomas/Cordell trio umil the white flag came out and the Husqvarna U.S.A. motor started to sour, putting Wilson within striking range coming out of turn five and into home when Wilson made an across-the-line move to finish second ahead of Harsha. Thomas was fo'urth, Cordell fifth and OttO Jorgenson sixth. Two thousand spectators were well primed for the start of the IS-lap Expert main event that saw Jeff Campbell put a 600cc Can-Am into the lead over Tom McCullough and Fay. Campbell and McCullough tangled, leaving th door open for Fay to put his Honda SOO into the lead with Charlie Barkman in second followed by one of the mOSt spectacular displays of riding yet in the season - a Mike Sullivan/JeH McDaniel duel. Frank Word motored alone in fifth, contolling the position ahead of Rookie Expert Scott Miller, who had his hands full with veterans Eric Swanson and Dana Hansen. Fay took his lead and stretched it out to a record distance, once again proving his domination of northwest TT action is 1"\0 fluke. Barkman held down second all alone with Sullivan and McDaniel swapping it out in a battle that went to the wire_ Fay and Barkman had first and second well wrapped up with Sullivan settling the argument for third in another of the many finish-line shootouts. McDaniel, Word and Miller rounded out the top ·six. Casey, Christain capture SHR nightMX By Sally Sideliner BRENTWOOD, CA, JULY 8 It was a track that demanded motocross and flat-track ability and to everyone's surprise the new night track at Sand Hill Ranch was just that - new and exciting! Kimo Casey of Walnut Creek Honda led the 12Scc Pros through lap one, jumped the triple jumps and landed in the puddle instead of over the puddle. Craig Christain of Cycle Gear blitzed by as Casey' quickly remounted and worked back up to second. The distance slowly cl6sed but Casey couldn't make the pass until Christain stalled in a tricky, tight tum. He restarted just as Caey came by but the momentum of the "Sky Jump" gave Casey the lead to the finish three laps later. Christain led moto two and Casey tried an inside pass on the first turn. The twO were side by side over the first hugh jump, but Casey soon broke to a three-second lead. Halfway through the race, Christain slid out on the sweeper, helping Casey to increase the distance and take the overall. Terry Bostard's Kawasaki led the Minis around the track with a I minute, 21.6 second-lap. That was just five seconds slower than the Open Pros! Bostard was flying too - on lap one he led Joel Sitts from Oregon until he hit the triple jumps and flew over the bars. But he worked his way back to second by the finish. In moto two Bastard took immediate command and the first overall. Some of the competition has returned from last summer. Obie and Ian LeU and Doug Delay had their Minis out for the first time. Ian Leff took home a trophy for first Mini Jr. and Don Piantenida for second. Larry Dashie1's Maico led the 250ccI Open Pro class until Craig Christain came on the scene in lap nine. Christain wem on for the win and Rich Mythen took third. David Rodriquez set quite a pace in moto two, but Christain was able to pick up a few seconds every lap and finally made the pass on lap 10, and went on to take the overall. My then had a seventh-place start and worked up to second by the checker. Results EX: 1. Micl-.f!n.i~b smoking the Open A and Pro mains. A 4-3-1 staged 2SOcc Pro lineup featured Juniors and Novices from a three-state radius. Fisher got the pole position and nabbed holeshot honors over the likes of McDon nell, Thomas and ovices Clay Clark, Ron Waters and Matt Johnson. Fisher (Gamer Yam/Simpson/Buffalo umber Plates) pulled away [rom Thomas on lap two after Thomas had a brief dispute with McDonnell and sped intoa good lead while Thomas moved up to challenge. The two Juniors battled for three laps until the last lap when things got too close and Fisher went down on the banked sweeper to give Thomas the lead, which he would take across the line (or the win over Clark, who moved into the vacated second position, followed by McDonnell, Waters and Johnson. Novice Dallas Greenslitt launched his Bultaco Astro into the sweeping banked tum one at the staging of the 2S0cc A main event over Fisher, Mike Lester, semi-winner Waters and Clark. Fisher and Greenslitt battled for the lead until the early part of the race when Fisher took command of the IO-Iap main. Fisher took the win to match his heat and trophy dash vietories to heat Greenslitl, Lester, Waters and Clark. Zirbel (Chaney's Auto/Yam) was the dominant force in the Open main events, which ran a unique format of a series of three heats instead of the customary main event. The 2SOcc classes were the only classes to run the heat, semi, main formal. Zirbel found the format to his liking and proceeded to smoke the other contestants, winning each of the three Open A events and tally a perfect 1- II beating Troy Yeo, who posted a 3-2-2 and Chuck Glender who went 4-3-3. Zirbel was out to try it again in the Open Pro class as he jammed his way into the lead over Yeo, Glender, Clark and Lester. Yeo and Glender provided some action for the spectators while Zirbel motored into another of his "ho-hum" leads and matched his perfect 3-for-3 tally to go six for six for the overall payoff over Yeo, who took a turn for the worse on the last lap, letting Clark snag second loot and Glender third. I • short track. Fisher stole the show in the 2SOcc A main while Thomas did the same in tbe 250cc Pro. Marty Zirbel.Lh.uJP~to l.)Vo'Opep ffiiI'n '!Yj~, Coupe roosts to Sacto victories By "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY I Dave Coupe roosted his Hondas to wins in all three Pro classes at Sacramento Raceway's Friday night stadium motocross races to earn the proverbial "six-pack" award for his eHorts. Hi-Point-supported Coupe pulled the holeshot in the opening 12Scc Pro moto with Jimmy Sisemore, Steve Arena and Steve Vlahos chasing. Brad Bruns broke the red brigade's strongh Ipl~en \l~.t90~ aslvaI;1tage qf VI,a- hos' temporary squirreliness and put his Suzuki into fourth. Then "Pee Wee" Arena fell in a berm and Bruns was up to third. Next, Coupe landed wrong off the stairstep jump and Sisemore swooped him. Coupe was back in front soon as Si emore fell while stretching his lead. Vlahos was pUlling the heat on second-place Bruns, but as he landed hard on flat ground after the hump-jump, his Honda threw its chain and the "Leapin' Leprechaun" was forced to push his mount back to the pits. Coupe took the win wi th Bruns a few seconds behind. Sisemore salvaged a second out of his misfortune, with Lance Burgess fourth. While moto one was a realthriIler, moto two was sedate in comparison. Coupe pulled another holeshot and, this time stayed for more than three laps, but Bruns found a line past the double-jump agent and wound up the moto in second for second overall. Conley was third and Sisemore fouith for third overall. Larry "Dashing" Dashiel was determined to give Coupe some competition in the Open Pro motos and he succeeded in doing just that in the first moto. Coupe won both motos but Dashiel stayed close the entire first moto.ln the second moto Dashiel was looking for a way by Coupe, crashed halfway through the race and limped to a fourth. Raymond Rust finished second and Frank Sacher third. Results OPEN PRo: 1. Oeve Coupe (Han): 2. Reymond Rust (Mai): 3. Frank sacher (Han). 250 PRO: 1. Coupe (Han): 2. Brad Bruns (Suz); 3.
