T. Brubaker (930) and K.Grave. battled for the 600cc win at Sear. Point. .... for the entire race. Yamamoto, like older brother Ron, has a unique, agressive riding style and Yamamoto used it to nab first Seldon, then a fallen Smith to take the checkered flag. Smith remounted to take a third and then scurried back to line up for the Open A main. Smith dominated the race from start to finish in fine style over the advances of alwayspresent Seldon and an on-the-move Fran Gillhoover, who took third. The 250cc Expert main event was reminiscent of many of the past races at Huelter, but still managed to keep the crowd in an uproar. Ron Yamamoto put his Karl Landrus/Team Jesus/Simpson/Miller Products/ Light Racing Bultaco into the.lead, a lead that would be all his, except for the brief moments that brother Rusty would creep up within striking range. Ron would then shut the door when it was time to get down to business and Rusty then was doomed for a back-seat position. Novice Tim Stults rallied to third. Cruickshank was surprised to be in a very unfamiliar situation at the start of the Open Expert main as he witnessed AMA Experts John Maddox, Yamamoto and, Arney Wick launch into the lead while he was mired in fourth. Cruickshank has dominated nearly every main this season in big-bore action, but was surprised to find out that Maddox, who was on an XR150 Harley-Davidson, was moving out frOnt. Maddox manhandled his big 750 while things were shuffling behind in a war for second involving Wick, Yamamoto and Cruickshank, who joined the hunt in the later stages. The lead changed on the last lap when Maddox left a hole for Cruickshank to move his way into for a last-corner pass and the win. Yamamoto trailed to finish second, Maddox third and Wick fourth. Cruickshank had the 500cc Expert where he liked them when the race was underway and stormed into another of his unchallengable leads after Yamamoto and new AMA Expert Rich Hayman dropped out of the race. Wick moved up a couple notches to second and beat Phil Hamby and Todd Sommers in a drag race for second to finish off a fast night of racing in the Idaho panhandle. Results 30 OPEN EX: 1. Moore cruises to Sears Point RR Win By Frank Nellis Photo by Doreen Robertson SONOMA, CA, JULY 3 The American Federation of Motorcyclists North returned to Sears Point International Raceway to find the race track in better condition than. it has been for years and the racers responded with some exciting action ina number of classes. At the start of the 450cc Modified Production race Scott Moore riding his RD, sponsored by Palo Alto/Daly City Yamaha, took the holeshot followed by Malt Riolo, Steve Hipp and Dale Alexander, riding a bike borrowed from Paul Ito. After the first lap, Moore had a comfortable lead while Riolo, Alexander and Hipp wee debating on who should precede who through the turn. The veteran Alexander asserted "age before beauty" and managed to persuade the oJhertwoofhispointofview. Buton the brakes in turn II, Riolo and Hipp gave a rebuttal that put Alexander in fourth, chasing the young upstarts. Alexander, troubled by a sliding rear tue, followed the pair, working out a plan to retake second place. Meanwhile in the front, Moore had lenthened his lead to 15 seconds, while while Riolo had gained a margin on Hipp. Alexander set his plan in motion. He dismissed Hipp's position with a pass at the entrance to turn seven and then set his sights on Riolo. Alexander put down Riolo's argument in turn 10 and closed the discussion. The race ended with Moore an undisputed first, Alexander in second and Malt Riolo in third. In the Open Superstreet race, Denny Doherty, riding his Motors West KawasakilBassani/Hannan's Machine Shop Kawasaki, celebrated Independence Day by skyrocketing into the lead with a 1:53 lap from a standing start. He was followed by John Morena, Dave Lang and Wade Edwards. Doherty's celebration ended with a bang on the next lap. He lit up his rear tire in turn five and when the smoke had cleared, Doherty was .ay- ing on the ground and his bike was a pile of twisted metal. John Morena assumed the lead on his Bargas Porting/Jack's Go Shop GS I000. The race ended with John Morena in first, Wade Edwards taking second, and David Lang, a ovice racer, holding onto third. In th~ 750cc Superstreet race, Bernd Koegler took another convincing win on his Walnut Creek Honda/Supertrapp/NO HQJlda. This puts Bernd in a commanding lead for the number one plate. Bernd got an unusually bad start allhe flag, but by the second lap he had managed to assume control and motor away {rom Lee Flemmingwho finished second. Don Green took a break from his TZ250 to ride a 750 Seca and because he had never competed in this class, he was gridded well back in the back. He spent the entire race working his Palo Alto Yarnaha/Kinnetic Analasys/DKG 750 Seca through traffic to finish the race in a well-earned third pOsition. Results FORMULA I: 1. K. Bryon! (Suz); 2. J. Carr sparkles at Hills Ferry ST By Bill Spencer NEWMAN, CA, JULY 1-2 Lionel Nunes brought Hills Ferry Raceway back to life for the spectacular Founh of July weekend and most of the fireworks were on the race traeks with an one-eighth-rnileroshion added {or extra enjoyment after the regwar quartermile oval was run. Friday night had a slightly rough, almost cushion surface, with Saturday night featuring an extremely smooth surface and a nearly full grandstand to highlight the racing. Chris Carr and Don Howard were the feature winners in the respective 250 and 500cc Expert shows, but all the racing from heats and semis to the end of the mains was gJ:eaL Carr read Leroy Baker's book on how to get the green first and was gone in the 250cc main. Craig Scroggins and Donny Howard scrapped about serond over Joe Knight and Bill Scott with Howard taking the edge. Howard then got the best of Mark Key in the 500cc main when they went at each other hammer and tong. Key led the show and was doing well, with Howard seemingly along for the ride until the last l,ap when .Howard made . , an inside move as Key slipped the front wheel just a tad too much. A little bump and Howard was off to the checkered flag. The Smith boys, Jason and Chad still own the Pee-Wee set, while Steve Rasmussen wants some of the 80cc Juniors to come back and give him a race on his KX. Dian Clardy took top 125cc honors, while Mike Macedo made another rare appearance and smoked the 250cc Novice troops. On Saturday night there were a lot more riders and spectators with some added fireworks over the rising San Joaquin river. Kevin Bricker took the top trophy in the I 25-200cc combined show while Stephen Mayfield beat cousin Eric Mayfield for a 250cc Novice win. Bryan McDowell overcame an early spinner for the 250cc Junior win in fine fashion over Winkie and a nonfalling Jon Nunez. The big money 250cc Expert class saw Mark Key run a flawless race on his Olympic Tune-up Yamaha with Chris Carr stabbing at his rear wheel the distance but nOl nearly hard enough. The two were long gone - with Craig Scroggins and Dave Ryan duking for third. Scroggins took it on the Family Cycle KX with Joe Knight fifth over Frank Garcia and PJ Sanchez. Mark Key looked for all intents a double winner with a good start in the 500cc Expert show, but Carr took his Jorgy's/TV Service/NO Can-Am 400 around the outside {or the win. .Results JULV 1. 1983 PEE WEE: 1. Tobey won the Open Expert competition on his Triumph 650 by two bikelengths over Cannon, who had fought his way forward after a bad start. Cannon put it all together in the 250cc Expert class by staving off Ely's charge in a crowd-pleasing duel to the finish. It was Cannon's eight-bikelength jump at the start that gave him the advantage he needed to win. Ely got his turn in the 500cc Expert division and he made the most of it as he stretched out a full straightaway advantage over second-place Cunis Cannon.
