Moran, Pfetzing enjoy Mid Summer-night dream winner Mark Dwyer charged through the pack from the 40 to take second from Ott in turn three on the second go- round. Dwyer, finding traction on the outside, was set to sweep by Hall for the lead in turn four when Hall bobbled directly in to his path. Dwyer had one place to go to avoid Hall and that was into the dirt and out of contention. Mazzacane had charged up from the back and went inside Ott for the lead at the end of lap three. Once OLD front. Mazzacane moved out to open a lead which he held the rest of the way to the Harald lechner checke.red. Scott Talkington took third after starting on the 40. In the Scratch main, Ott was the initial leader from the pole ahead of joe Kreisberg, Andy Northrup and Mazzacane. Kreisberg shot outside and into the lead in turn two only to have Ott redaim the top spot in turn four. Charging like a "Wild Man." Mazzacane found himself in second on lap two, and, like the Handicap main, he made Ott his victim as he got inside and by for the lead at the end of the second circuit. Mazzacane ended up taking the win by half a straight over Ott, Northrup and Kreisberg. By Jim Brown LONG BEACH. CA, JULY 15 Speedway fans got a real treat at Long Beach Veterans Stadium tonight as they got to watch their favorite riders stretch out on the quarter-mile track at the Mid Summer Classic. The quarter-mile is considered standard size for speedway throughout the world. and enabled the riders to get some 18 excellent experience [or international competition. The program included Handicap as well as Scratch racing. Kelly Moran. a veteran o[ international compeition, was right at home and walked away with the Scratch main. Moran. sponsored by STP, UNO, Godden and Arai. won his Scratch heat but in the semi took second behind heat winner Mike Bast. In the main event. Bast had the lead, but constant pressure from Moran paid off as Bast went into an almost-vertical wheelie in turn two and Moran shot out for the lead and the win. Moran said that Bast had been lifting oU in almost every tum, and he knew that staying with him would payoff. Sam Ennolenko won his heat and the semi. but took the outside line in the main and was slowly Idt in fourth as Ron Preston worked past him. Dubb Ferrell. who surprised everyone at the American Qualifier. had an overall good evening in both sides of the program. induding his win in the Scratch consolation. The myth o[ Handicap racing on the quarter-mile being boring was disproven tonight. Robert Pfetzing. stili recovering from a broken collarbone. the plague of speedway riders - wore a chest protector borrowed from Lance King and won the Handicap main. Pfetzing. sponsored by Valvoline, Kal-Gard and STP. said his shoulder had stiffened up. between races, and he didn't know if he would be able to race. He had to race hard to win with twO lead changes in an exciting, tight race. Pfening shared wins in the heat races with Moran, Leni Faas and h Ron Preston. Preston and Mike Curoso won the Handicap semis and finished third and fourth in the JTlain. Second Division was all Scratch racing and brought out some hidden talent. Tom Walton, sponsored by 2 Ken-Chu, Walton Roofing and Simpson, won his heat race and went on to win the main event. Walton was unbeatable with his flat track racing experience. john McNeil, Tim McCasland and Dennis Briggs won their heat races. The quarter mile took it's toll on bikes and bodies. Dave DeTemple bumped Sterling Cogar and went to the hospital with, what else. a broken collarbone. after doing some cartwheels down the track. There were six bikes broken and numerous others were sounding sick from the grueling speeds. Shane McDonald took out a section of fence and bent two posts in turn two, but appeared OK. After suHering with engine problems early in the program. Mazzacane (Parts Plus/Oakley jaw) took his position on the 4o-yard line for the start of the Handicap main. CA, JULY 12 "The doctor said my collarbone is 80% healed, so I'm just going to test it out and see how it feels," said rapid Rob Pfetzing before the Tuesday night festivities at Ventura got underway. Well, Pfening's broken collarbone, injured in a june 28 turn-two calamity at Ventura, felt ju t fine and he rode even better than that to win the Scratch main event. It was Pfetzing's first win here since he won the "Big One" - the Spring CIa ic back in March. And Denny copellite made hir.n.sflf, and his sponsor, KROQ, happy as he took the Handicap main. After winning a laugher in his heal race. Pfening faced some tougher competition in his semi, namely "Sudden" Sam Ermolenko. winner of six trophies here, and that returning stranger Kelly Moran, fourth best in the world. Moran. out of four. got the gate and led into turn two with Pfening. flying on the outside, just behind him. Showing a flair for the dramatic, Pfetzing waited until last turn to put a move on Moran and won by a wheel as the crowd went nuts. as did Ermolenko who failed to transfer. The Scratch main seemed mighty strange without either Mike Faria (off to England) or Ermolenko (off his game), but they decided to run it anyway and give someone else a chance. It turned out to be a replay of the semi with Pfeningon the outside where the action is, and Moran taking the inside line. But this time Pfening took the early lead and Moran stayed on the inside, where he ended up - in second. Pfening's recent conversion to a more "go-far-it" attitude on the rrack was never more impressive. In Handicap racing, the track was a bit too wetat the beginning aseight riders fell over in just the first three races, but only [our for the rest of the night. Notable crashers included Ermolenko. Moran, Greg Ayers, Steve Lucero and john MacNeill. Scopellite couldn't get around joe Kreisberg in his heat, but passed thr~ guys. induding Kreisberg. to win his·semi. Kreisberg was going so fast that he slid out around tum one after the race was over and Mike Mazzacane clipped him going by. Fortunately no one was hurt. And Shane McDonald rode a perfect race off the Io-yard line to win his semi, just as he had done in his heat. Scopellite didn't mess around in the main - he passed everyone on the first lap. and never faltered until it was over. McDonald unsuccessfully dlased Scopellite for the entire five. laps, but did succeed in making him. nervous on a few occasions. me Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Rob Pletzing; 2. Kolly Moron; 3.
