TEN YEARS b· - AGO ~\ . ~~MICHEUM Chuck Joyner took his Triumph to victory in the Castle Rock National TT, but the runner-up finish of Yamaha's Kenny lloberts moved him further out in the points lead of the AMA Grand National Olampionship. 1laDdy Scott (Tri) finished third, followed by Harley-Davidson-mounted Jim!lice. Congratulations to Randy Mamola, who won the Champion Spark Plug 200 Formula One race on Michelin tires aboard a 500cc Suzuki. The Kansas round of the Inter-AMA Motocross Series went to Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers, even though the "Flying Dutchman" failed to win either moto. In the first moto Karsmakers had a serious run-in -leading to a fist fight after the races - with CZ teammates Antonin Baborovsky and Jaroslav Falta. Karsmakers finished second to Baborovsky in that moto, and his third place behind Honda's Marty Tripes and Husky's Hrikki Mikkola in the second round proved to be good enough for the win. Baborovsky was second overall and Mikkola took third. In the 500cc Support class, Husky rider Mike Hartwig won all three mOlOS for the overall. The weekly Friday night speedway races at Costa Mesa saw a new winner as 16-year-old Bruce Penhall won the Second Division main event. Journalist hndy !liggs tried speedway on the same night, but wound up on the ground. DOug Winchell and his 250 Bultaco pulled off the win in the 1005 M.e. D-!7 hare scrambles. Winchell had the lead early, then recovered it when Mitch Mayes and Jim Fishback went out with mechanical difficulties. Steve Staats wound up second overall on a Honda 250 Elsinore, followed by the big Husky of A.C. Bakken. California mlOorcyclists scored a victory when the CalifoJ1lia Department of Parks and Recreation classified the Red Rock area as a state recreation area rather than a state park. The latter would have outlawed OHV use. Suzuki rider' Doug Garrison won the 250cc Expert class of a Hanford, California, scrambles. Garrison also competed in the 125cc Experts, where he finished second lO Frank Adamo (Yam). llandy Mamola captured the Mini F and Mini H classes in a short track at the Oakdale, California, Pioneer Arena. Mamola rode a Hodaka in the former and an Indian in the latter. Another Indian rider, Doug Chandler, copped the Mini A honors. Skeet Hise scored a pair of wins in a Bend, Oregon, motocross. Hise rode Hondas to the top spot in both 250cc and Open Junior action. Bultaco-mounted Lowell Moural bested Ossa rider Larry Drew and Yamaha pilOl J.
