anada-Northern California-Northern Ne r main event had a new face in the winner's circle as Seattle Honda's Chris Fitzhugh burned the main to win over Susan Word, Novice action was swept by VerI Smith on a Yamaha, taking a last-lap win when th e first and second place riders went out. Mike Lawrence put hi s Bennett/ Le ctron Honda into th e lead a t th e start o f the Novice m ain event , com ing through th e dog-leg section followed by Terry Wahl , T im Stutts, Larry Staggs an d Frank Crane. Lawrence began 10 put th e first-year No vices wh ere he likes them , way back in th e dust, wh il e Wahl opened up th e throttle on hi s KX-powered machine, Californian Sta ggs held down third ov er Smith, wh o had work ed through th e p ack a nd wa s looking for an opening. T he rac e went down to th e wire wh en La wren ce an d Wahl came ou t o f turn five sid e by sid e. Wahl th en tri ed 10 execute a pa ss, only to cra sh himself out of contentio n, while Law ren ce seized in th e very same co rn er. Am ids t a ll th e co n fusio n it was Sm it h push in g past Staggs with h ard -ridin g Ron Wat ers moving into thi rd for th e fin al fin ish order. Jeff Harsha sat th e pol e position in th e Junior main for th e seco nd night in a row a nd wa s a n tic ipating th e big win h e ha s yet to snag. But Fitzhugh took the lea d, po wering off th e line, while Don Wil son, Dan Bennett an d Har sh a fill ed th e 2-4 spo ts. Bennett got by Fitzhugh to tak e th e lead with a kamak azi p ass o n la p three an d th e order soon became Bennett , Fitzhugh a nd Word when H arsha 's Husq varna went so ur for th e seco nd ni ght in a row . Wil son entered th e p icture a nd ' . it was a )-2-3 draf t down th e long stra ightaway . Wh en th e tri o came over theTT jump, it wa s Fit zhugh in th e led, gi ving Bennett hi s h ardest fought race yet thi s season . Wil son and Bennett got to o close which sent both down a nd ga ve Fi tzhugh th e win over Word who h ad been steadily moving up. Frank Word , Hur st a n d Fay launched off the line in th e Expert main event with Thomas McCullough, Campbell, Brett Barkman and Kirk Strong gunning for positions. Hurst took the lead from Word, but just as soon, his trusty Triumph coughed and put Word back into th e lead over McCullough a nd Campbell, Fay entered the picture after getting around both Campbell and MeCu llough for second, Wo rd was next 10 experience mechanical woes and drop back, putting Fay into th e lead . Fay showed everyone on hand just what it takes 10 cut it on th e National TT circu it and stormed aro un d the course. Campbell came from nowhere to push Fay th e rest of th e wa y, o u tpowering Fay's 500 on the straigh t, but not in th e corners, Fa y did manage the win how ever , with Campbell again com ing clos e for second a nd McCullough th ird .The ra ce for fourth was interesting an d kept th e fans awake on a ch ill y night with Strong mov ing by Hurst' s ailing Triumph and Barkman 's Can-Am. • Results EX: 1.
