First ou t of the gat e for the Pros were th e 125s. and Berry grabbed the holeshot immediately . Gikling put heavy pressure on Berry for the first part of th e rnoto, but in the middle laps Gikling slid by for a lead he would not give back and the win . . In roliiid two , it was Gikling with the holeshot and th e roles were reversed as Berry put the pressure on from behind. Gikling remained in control for the opening few laps, but a determined Berry found a line underneath Gikling on th e fourth lap, and shot by for the lead. Gikling gave a stead y chase. but his efforts were futile as Berry took his Kawasaki to the finish with a nice cushio n at the end. Scherb takes four of five By Margaret Orr Burge victorious at Sturgis ST By Carol Hart STURGIS, SD , JUNE 10 Matt Burge ate up the competition in the 125cc class on his water-cooled Honda at the J.c. Hoel short track. Burge took ad- 42 vantage of excellent track con ditio ns and never relented in his flawless pursuit of victor y. First place in the 250cc class went to Yamaha rid er Mark Larive. Larive and Rex Conrad had a lready battled it out in th e heat races with one win each. T he main event seemed destined to sett le th e score. Conrad went out on th e fou rth lap leavin g Lariv e with th e win , Conrad got h is revenge in th e Open class as h e smoked the ot he r riders for the first place aw ards. T he battle for seco nd seesa wed between Brian Thomas and Dennis Bern al. Bernal had the lead until th e last corn er of the last la when Thomas poured it on to win th e number two spo t. Berry busts to B.R .A. win By Brian George RAPID CITY, SD, J UNE 12 The halfway mark in th e 1983 Borderline Racing Association 's motocross series was reached Sunday at Highway 79 Racewa y, where more than 100 riders were on hand, despite looming thunderstorms all day lon g. to compete in ro und 10on th e rough stadi um -type circ uit. New double jumps and bu ilt-up whoops demanded steady concentration by a ll co mpe titors and a number of riders found themselves auger ing head first into the hard-packed race co urse. BOYD , TX. J UNE II Scottie Scherb came to Mike Kidd's Hill side Racewa y a n d took over th e victory circle for th e night. Starting in th e 125cc short track event, where he ra n seco nd until th e n ext-t o-l a st lap. Sch erb fin all y go t under Mike Ha le. He th en pu lle d away to th e fini sh line a hea d o f H al e a nd Willi e McCoy, all a full stra ig h ta way in front of fo urth- p laced Trace Pol son. In th e 250cc Junior short track , Scherb was led into th e first corner by McCoy, but h e passed him on th e in side on lap two. McCoy continued to push Sch erb hard until th e last lap. Then he nipped Sch erb's rear tire and hit a p at ch o f loos e dirt in th e number one co rner on Hillside's newl y insta lled packed clay surface . The Open Juni or class saw J ames Huddleston tak e th e holeshot to lead wire to wire. J ack Yost fini sh ed in seco nd and Scherb third , with no more th an a bikelength between each of th e firs t three riders for th e last half of a tight race . Th e two heat ra ce winners in th e 250cc Expert race swapped places several times in the first four laps of the main. David Fisher a nd Charlie Orr fought a hard battle till the fifth lap. Fisher's bike quit o n the second corner , leaving Orr to ride unchallen ged . After much position cha n ging in th e first three laps , th e rest o f th e pack sett led into th eir fini shing order with Kelly J ohnson, James Harrington , Tubby Dot son and Mik e G eorge rounding ou t th e front five places. Th e 80cc IT saw th e Juniors and Seniors run a co m bined race , and yo u n eeded a sco reca rd to tell wh o wa s wh o . Junior rid er J oey North led th e first half o f the ra ce. Senior rider Scherb was finall y abl e to move up a nd pass to finish first . The seco nd place Senior finis her was Tim Kay, co m in g ac ro ss th e finish lin e behind Juniors North a nd Bill Richards. The classes were sco red separately. In the Open Expert TT John Gladwill got the holeshot on his new Honda. but Gary Kidd had passed him by the end of the first lap. and Rusty Pattillo did likewise by the end of lap two. Saturda y's rid ers schoo l had 14 new faces, Everybody got lot s of practice on th e 13-turn I.7-mil e co u rse. Oak Hill is a scrat ch er track with tight turn s and sh ort stra igh ts, Th e turns vary from slig h t bends to 180degr ee sweepers, with the track going up a nd down as well as side to side.
