The day was hot an d th e tra ck was stic ky, making for fast ra cin g a nd tight co m pe tition. The first event of the da y was th e 600cc Stoc k Production race a nd the fron t ro w co ntai ned rep resenta tives from all o f the maj or brands offering m iddl eweigh t road burner s - Kawa sak i, S u zu ki and Yamaha . Frank Mazur , th e reigning cl u b cha m p ion . took th e hol esh ot on h is G Pz 550, closely followed by Kirk Graves a nd T om Che w. Further back th ere was a pack of more th an 40 bikes dicing for the lesser spots. Graves, showi ng n o respect for the cham pion, passed " Fast Frank " o n the first lap and immediately began improving h is advantage. T he top three spots remained th e same fo r a lap , bu t back in the pack Todd Brubak er h ad emerged fro m th e masses to find so me raci ng room , an d h e began to close on Che w. Che w must have felt th e p ressure from th e upstart rookie , beca use he seemed to wick it up a bit. U nfort u na tely, h e wic ked it u p a bit too much for hi s a.i li ng shoc k a bso r ber. Hi s suspe n sion bottom ed in th e " Caro usel" section , wa shing o u t hi s rea r wh eel an d se n di n g hi s beaut ifull y prepared Suzu ki skidde ring o ff th e track with Chew in close pursuit. This left on ly Mazur betw een Brubak er and G raves, wh o by this time h ad ga in ed a small but co mfortable four-second margin. As Brubaker closed on Mazur, it looked like the Novi ce rider would add in su lt to the inj u ry administered by G rave s earlier. But suc h was not th e case; just as Bru bak er was ready to m ake his move h is gear sh ift lever fell off, for cing th e yo u n g rider to finish th e race stuck in one gear. The race en ded wi th Graves cruisin g across start fin ish wi th a n eigh tsecond lead. Coupe, Dashlel win at "new" Sacto track By "Nuclear" Nuekam SACRAMENTO , CA, J UNE 17 The action a t the weekly Thursda y night motocross at Sacramento Raceway has been hot and heavy, but there have been so me complaints th at th e track was a littl e too " easy ." After a da y with th e tra ctor, though , th e race' s promoters ga ve th e riders a co u rse th ey co u ld sm ile about. Spectators didn 't seem 10 mind th e n ew layout, eithe r, as th ey clung to th e chain -lin k fen ce a t every available po int 10 wat ch th e ac tion as closely as possibl e. Coupe won both 125cc Pro motos hands down. In th e first rnoto Cory Cantaloupi mad e a brilliant yet dar- ing pa ss on Coupe in turn one on ly 10 stall h is engine two turns lat er as h e a p proached the sta ir-s te p jump. Coupe squared it at the top of th e wall and. by virtue of the momentum which invariably results when gas sing a highl y tuned CR250 WFO down an eigh t-foo t embankment, zapped Wood over the double j u m p s. As Co u p le pulled his helmet off a t mote's end, h e sm iled and proclaimed, " I love it ; it 's nice - it's the best track I' ve ever seen here!"
