Amateurs attack wild Washougal Gold Cup By Brian Barnes WASHO UGAL, WA, J U NE 12 Washougal's Natio nal track was ho st to the fifth race of Yamaha Gold Cup thi s weekend and was the scene of a very successful event with some 400 riders taking part. No less than 10 riders wen t home with double-mote sweeps for the first overall positions. Wh ile j eff Daily was win ni ng the 60cc Expe rt class, T ara Harr ison took third in the first race and then stormed past Kawasaki 's Butch Smith to capture second overall. Smi th was third and Portl and' s Richie Abram s was fourth. j ason McCo rmick took his lon g overdue first Gold Cup win in front o f Yamah a-mou n ted Travis Markell witlr Shane West and Brett Hol m third and fourth, Team Gr een' s Larry Ward won h is fou rth of five Gold Cup races so far , bu t Team Yam aha's Lowell Thompson has defin itely gotten back into the swing of thin gs after his inj ury, scoring two runner-up placin gs. To h is credit, Stewart arrived battered a t checkpoint two 19 mi n u tes late, then dropped out at the halfway point lu n ch stop at La Honda. In a show o f sportsmanship , Stewa rt's riding buddy, Pete R u f~ , also dropped ou t to accom pany h im to the Kaiser Hosp ital in Redwood City, acco u nting for two o f the fo ur DN Fs. R ick Lokke a nd Duane Spence also put on quite a show with 52-year-o ld Dua ne Spence wi nning over the 42-\'ear-old "kid" Lok ke in the first rnoto, and Lo kke lead in g most of the second, At the white-flag lap, Spence put on the hard charge with bo th riders getti ng off and co Ilecting soi l samples on the short stut ter jumps. Arena backed up a nd took o ff wit hout the Husky but O verland co u ld n't get it started in less than 20 kicks. Arena was off to th e races in the second mot o wi th a handy lead by mid rnoto , but in an a tte m pt 10 clear the double jump, he cras hed spectacul arl y an d slo wly ca me arou nd for a sevent h.
