Ron and his friends arranged everything to make the spectators think they were in jolly old England from a large Union Jack flying in the breeze to an afternoon shower to keep the tempeature down. The afternoon was spent looking and. for most. reliving memories of what the y used to ride. How long has it been since you saw a Triumph Terrier? Gunter went on to win th e second rnot o a nd overall in front o f J ordan and H ill. Scott Chesser took h is Kaw asaki to the win in th e 83cc Modified Intermediate class and looked like he would do it again in the Stock class until he and Tommy Coll ier met in a turn. It was a Kaw asaki sweep a nywa y with Jason Langford tak ing the overall over Shane LeBlanc and Harlan Willoughby. J U NE 5 With round nine of the Borderline Racing Associa tion 's 21race summer motocross series moving to Osage once aga in , Newcastl e Mot or cycle Club Track Steward Eddie Porter an d Club President Robin King reworked sections of th eir home circuit to give the 125 rid ers who turned ou t so meth in g new to con ten d with. Enjoying the new course designs and excellent racing weather was Spearfish Honda's "Flyin ' Mike" Friend. who swept all four motos in the 125and 250cc Professional classes on h is way to grabbing both overall wins and ex ten di n g his points lead in each. Yamaha rider Todd Gikling pl ayed runner-up to Friend in each of those rnotos, always consistent but never matching the Honda's speed, while in the Opens it was once again Dave Molder. riding for R ice Cycles. walking off with both motos and the overall in that di vision . First of the Pro classes to leave the gate were the 125s, a n d off the sta rt G ik ling set th e pa ce and took co ntrol. Friend pulled into second within th e first lap. but G ikl ing had built up a co mfort a ble margin by that point. Lee Verne Berry ran a cl ose th ird ear ly on. but by the halfway mark. Gikling and Fr iend were all alone o u t front o f Berry. with Gikling still sett in g a bli stering pace that took Fr iend well into the later laps to overco me. With only two laps remaining. Gikling found Friend within a bikelength, as they passed the fin ish line area, and when the duo headed into a pack of lapped riders, Friend went outside and around the group. while Gikling was stranded behind the traffic. That was all Friend needed to pull away in the remaining lap and a half, and when the checkers flew it was Friend with a comfortable lea d over G ikling, Berry. Curt Hyde and T om Fleming. Round two proved to be all Friend's as he took th e ho leshot ahead o f G ikling, and spe nt the entire rnot o p u lli ng aw ay. East vs. West M X at Burleson Park By Joe Milian BURLESON, TX. JUNE 5 It was east Texas versus west Texas at Burleson Motocross Park, and over 225 riders met to accept the challenge of this friendl y rivalry. Wh en th e dust cleared. everyone in attendance had th eir own opinion as to wh o had been su peri or but a ll agr eed that representation from both sides was excellent in a ll classes . Mi tch Mitson hurled his Husky into the lead to open th e show in the com bine d Expert class but co u ld only hold hi s position for one lap. That was to be the on ly lap that anyon e o ther than John Kindhart led a ll day long a s th e Lewisville rider edged his Honda around Mitson shortly after the completion of the in itial circuit and was not seriously challenged for the remainder of the moto. Morris Troxell also got by Mitson on lap two and held that spot to the flag. The start of the second heat saw Kindhart, Troxell. and Ronnie Prado get to the first turn sim u lta neo usly. with Troxell bumping past Prado as Kindhart grabbed the lead. Troxell managed to stay upright. but Prado nose-dived into the loam. Mark Filler wrest ed th ird place fro m Ga ry T ucker o n the th ird lap and tha t's the way the order stayed for the rest of the race. Kindha rt , T rox ell a n d Fill er.
