N.w M.xico.Color.do.Wyo..il Central Pipeline Welch vvails to Cherry Creek vvin By Maxie Abernethy JERICHO, UT. MAY 29 Maico-mounted Kevin WeIch, 23, won the 1983 Cherry Creek Hare and Hound, a race that was first run the year he was born. Second in 1982, WeIch won this year's Sugarloafers M.e. event with a fiveminute lead on th e runner-up Yamaha rider Brad Strong. Over 300 riders from most of the western states participated in th e event. T he promoting club had to deal with many problems in puttin g on this year 's race, including an ex tention of grazing allocat ions, and related problems with sheep ranchers that served to cut down the area ava ila ble to stage th e race . At th e smokebom b, Honda CR480 rid ers Robert and Harvey Howard had the lead, followed by Welch's 490. Welch took the lead descending th e first rock y mountain. while Robert Howard a nd Husky rider Kris Morgan both suffered flats in th e rock y go ing. T hey both went back to th e pits. but Morgan could not find a satisfactory replacem ent and rode th e loop with a flat tire, droppin g to 36th. At th e first check. 'Welch had th e lead over the 495 KTM of Scott Gerber. Strong had moved up to third. an d then overtook Gerber by check two . Harvey Howard and 250 KTM rider Shawn Gerber were discussing fourth in a battle that would continue fo r most of the race . Welch came in an and out of the pits in a hurry. extending h is lead over Strong, Scott Gerber, Harvey Howard, Shawn Gerber. Paul Emerson, Butch Laswell. Bryan Allred. T.E. Anastasion and Preston Gerber. Meanwhile. the radio crew reported that many riders had run out of gas and were stranded in the Li ttle Sahara sand dunes. Finally. a four-wheel drive veh icle was dispatched to aid the riders. Itwas uncertain wh a t had caused the problem because th e loop was no longer than usual, but perhaps the approach to the dunes from the opposite side was a factor. Welch was still in control of th e second loop, but Morgan had repaired his tire and was making a charge, reducing his deficit on the leader by 10 minutes on th e second loop. The battle between Harvey Howard and Shawn Gerber cooled momentarily when both got off th e course and Gerber was first to get back on track, although both had to ride hard to make up time. Coming off th e second loop and heading out onto the final cir cuit. it was still Welch. Strong. Scott Gerber. Emerson and Preston Gerber. Morgan was making up time, but o n the final loop he could only advance as far as fifth , splitting the Shawn Gerber/Howard Harvey duel. So Welch cruised in for th e win. Strong finished second with Scott G erber third and Shawn G erber fourth . first 250cc Expert. Morgan's wild ride was good for fifth , while H arvey Howard .cla i m e~ sixth a nd Howard Pickett was seventh , seco nd in th e 250cc Expert class. Allred. Reed Bright a nd Preston Gerber rounded out the top 10. Ger ber also was first Over 30 Expert. Top Am ateur in th e race was Open class Honda rid er Kenny Meeker a t 19th overa ll.
