MacCracken too k over the thi rd spot after McMahon dropped out, After that point, th e top positions remai ned the same as Griewe too k the checkered flag first . Maloney fops tough Pro battle By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, J UNE 4 Bryan Maloney powered his Honda to the 250cc Pro class win at this week 's Saddleback motocross race , just edg in g Yam aha pilot Vin ce McMahon from th e top position a fter Mik e Beier, th e da y's fa stest r id er, devel oped mech anical problem s. Beier pushed hi s Yamaha to a com ma ndi n g lead in race o ne as Malon ey, McMahon, Honda-mounted Ed Arn et, Suzuki pilot Ri ch ard Sands a nd Yamaha rider Clark Jones bauled for th e top five positions under a sli ghtl y overcast sky th at kept tra ction excellent for th e first rnoto. At th e h alfway point Beier led by 12-seconds with Maloney running in th e number two slo t just ahead of McMahon. With three laps remaining, Beier 's front tir e began 10 lose a ir. The duel for second place closed qui ckl y on th e lead er as Bei er strugg led to stay o u t front . On th e last lap. Mal oney a n d McM ahon flashed past Beier with McMahon trying a last-minute mo ve for th e lead th a t fell just in ches sh ort. Beier held on to fin ish th ird beh ind Mal onev a nd McMahon as Sands rode hard to tak e th e chec kers fourth ahea d of J ones and Arn et, McMahon sho t 10 th e lead in round two action with Malon ey close beh ind. Beier had rep aired h is mount betw een rn oto s a n d h ad a good sta rt, but mor e mec ha nical p roblem s dropped h im 10 11th a t rnot o 's end. McMahon contin ued 10 lead th ro ugho ut most o f the rnoto wi th Maloney moving up to cha llenge nea r the end. The two lea din g riders traded the fro nt spot several times in the fin al few la ps u nt il bot h riders tangled and fell with two la ps left, Mal oney remo u nted qui ckl y an d rod e off with the wi n as Arn et flash ed past McMahon, wh o was str ug glin g to restart. Arnet pi cked up seco nd pl ace with McMahon cru ising across th e lin e in third ahead o f J on es. Mal on ey took th e overall win with th e runner-up shar e of th e purse going to McMahon. Boyd crUIsed to a 2-2 victo ry wh il e Pa ul Schreffl er (Hon) took secon d overa ll with a 4-1 ou ting . At th e sta rt o f rnoto one, Schre ffler took h is big-bore Honda to th e fro nt of th e pack a hea d of Ron Ri ch (Yam), Bo yd , Dean T ea gue (Ma i) a nd Peter Guy (Mai). At th e end o f la p o ne, Rich stuffed h is Yamaha bySchreffler. Ri ch ex tended hi s lead wh ile Boyd began to p ut heav y pressure o n Schreffler. For th e next three laps, th e battle over second became fierce. Boyd found a flaw in Schreffler 's defen se and took over second. By th at time th ere was no cha nce in ca tch in g th e leader since he had developed a co mforta ble lead. Ri ch took th e win foll owed by. Boyd , Teague, Schreffler and Guy. Th e second mota h ol esh ot went to Schreffler wh ile Guy, T ea gue a nd Boyd follow ed , Ri ch 's cha nce a t taking th e overa ll ended as he went down , dro pping to th e rear o f th e pack. By the half-way point Schreffler ' enjoyed a huge lead. At th e same ti me, Boyd ma naged to slip by both Teague a nd G uy. This mea nt that if Bo yd stayed in secon d till the end o f the mo to he would take the overa ll. And tha t is exactly wh a t he d id. Kent " Fifi" Sh epard a boa rd a big -bore Yam aha smoked the Vets field a fter nabbing both holeshot s. Moto one saw " Fifi" stru gg le with a hard-charging field a s Juniors, Intermediates and Experts all ran to geth er . T ak in g th e inside line downhill to th e tree turn , Fifi was sh oved almost into th e branch es and eme rged in second as Robert Fortier assu med first pl ace. Disappearing into "The Blackhole" behind th e tower , Fifi wa s caugh t by Charl ie Spellman a nd had 10 settle for a solid th ird in rnot o one. MOIO two for the Vets was ca lled to th e line a nd Shepard chose the far o u tside left sta rt ing grid posit ion. Th e big Yamaha bo lted up th e sta rt h ill wi th a mor e determ in ed pil ot , a nd th is go' rou nd took th e middle into th e downhill. S uccessfu l with th e hol esh ot aga in, She pa rd didn 't even look back as he ro m ped to a runaway firsl. Mot o o ne's winner swa p ped pl aces with Sh epard, end ing in a tie on points, but " Fifi" was awarded first place.
