Moran sliced to th e in side o f tu rn one to tak e the lead w ith Mill er and Cook trailing. Cook rea lized h e wou ld have to ga m ble in order to pass both Mill er and Moran for th e win a nd moved u p h igh in th e co rners in a bid to pow er by on the ou tside . Th e a tte mpt fai led in a cloud o f du st in turn one as Cook slid o ut and th en caromed heavi ly o ff th e reta in ing wal l. The race was halted as th e medica l crew rushed to Coo k's ai d. H e was soo n u p , sligh tly sha ken , a nd disq ualified fro m the resta rt. Miller a ppeared to have th e hol eshot on th e restart, but Mor an , wh o had borrowed Siga los' bik e a fter Cook went down, darted to the o utside and used th e cus hion to hi s advantage, je tt ing into th e lead. He went on to tak e th e win and th e last q ua lifyi ng slot. "It was a hard meeting for me," th e defe nd ing Nationa l C ha mpion said of hi s eveni ng's wor k.
