J UN E 4-5 Husqvarna-mounted Kevin Hines turned in the best two-day score in the Trask Mountain Two-Day ISDE Qualifier, winning the 250cc Qualifier class by over 100 points (seconds) and topping 500cc class winner Chip Howell by 33, 3219-3254. Third best score of the weekend was turned in by a local 14 favorite, 500cc A class rider Brad Tumidge (KT M) with a 3300. The Trask Mountain Two-Day was hosted by the Team Oregon Racing Association and drew 157 riders. The sa me basi c co urse was used for both days, with a reversal or direction and a few new sections added Sunday to bring the day's mileage from 176 to 182 miles. A 4.5-mile terrain test was run each day on th e course, and fivelap motocross heats were run at the conclusion of each day 's ride . The Day one ISDE vetera n Carl Cranke, ridin g a n 80cc Fant ic in th e 80cc Qualifi er class more or less Ior g rins, was the first rider o ut a t 6 a.m. Out on th e loop, Dw ight Rudder saw his cha nces o r mak in g the ISDE sq ua d vanis h whe n he seized his H usky in the special test . The Mississippi rider had needed two good scores from thi s event to have a cha nce at the trip to Wales. Fritz Kadlec, ridi ng a wa ter-cool ed Kawasaki rno tocrosser, was fastes t th ro ugh the da y's terrai n test, turning a 668-point ta lly in the uph ill run. Hines was second fastest with a 680. . At the concl usion or the day, H usky rider Kevin Brown came into the pits wit h a holed exha ust pipe. No t having a spare, Brown used the hal f hour he had before he ha d to impound his mach ine to try a nd pa tch th e pipe. Brown used epoxy, a me ta l pa tch Irorn a n a lum in um so h dri nk ca n a nd safety wire to mak e th e repa ir, but the pipe ended u p break ing in hal f two la ps from th e end o r th e motocr oss. Kadl ec was a lso bu sy, repl acin g h is rea r fender a fter destro yin g it in a loopout, a nd repl acing spokes in h is rear wh eel. Kadl ec th en went o u t in hi s MX heat a nd ra n away from th e pack to record th e fastest time of the da y. Brown had cha llenged Kadl ec for th e first Iew turns, but then tang led with Kadl ec a nd fell , ge tti ng up al most in last pl ace. Mach in e troubles later in the heat would end up costi ng Brown a bo ut 200 seco nds in th e test. Oregon rider Barrett Brown go t o ut early in h is heat, but Chip Howell go t his XCSOO H usky on the gas and closed to with in a second at th e end o r th e five laps. They wound up th e da y fir st a nd second in th e 500cc Qualifier class, with on ly 17 seconds between th em . Turnidge, a highly successful Oregon desert racer, turned in th e third best motocross scor e. a 987-second run that followed th e 972 turned in by Kadlec and th e 985 or Hines. In th e 125cc Qualifier ranks, KTM rider Dave Riant led Husqvarna pilot Dan Sinkoff by 20 points when the day 's results were posted. Cranke had an insurmountable lead in the 80cc Qualifier ; insurmountable by virtue of Cranke's sole-contestant status. In leading the 250cc Qualifier class, Kadlec had the best score of the da y at 1640 points/seconds. Hines was 25 seconds off the pace at 1665. The big furor of the weekend centered on the 500cc Qualifier class results for Saturday's terrain test. The best score listed was a n 808 for Howell, six seconds slower than th e time listed for Cranke a nd h is 80cc Fantic in a primaril y uphill route. In noting the di screp ancy, AMA Member Activit ies Director Hugh Flem ing said, "Neither ride r fell, a nd I can' t believe that Cranke ca n beat Howell when Howell is ridin g a 500cc Husky." A p rot est was fil ed Sunda y night, but co u ld not be resolv ed th en, and Flem in g too k all th e paperwork back to Westervill e, Ohio. T hree days later, he exp lai ned, " T he best I ca n figure is that the re was a lull before the 500cc a nd Four-Stroke riders came to the begi n n ing ofthe specia l test. The starter in th e test wasn't using a digita l wat ch , bu t o ne with a sweep second han d. I think he entered the wrong starti ng ti mes for the 500cc class riders." Flem ing too k a way 120 seconds orr all the scores , and with the ad justment, H o well 's terra in-test score was eig h t seconds slower than H ines'. Howell wasa lsoeight seconds slower than H ines in th e Saturday mo tocross. Day two After a ll his troubles o n the first day, Kevin Bro wn started the second day, but was soo n o ut o r th e running wh en his transm ission brok e. Kadl ec, wh o needed to a t least finish th e second day to qual ify Ior the team, had hi s troubles wh en he fouled a spa rk plug in th e terrain test and lost a co up le o r minu tes there. Kadl ec a lso had two nat tir es on th e day, ha vin g to carry his bik e through one tim e check to avo id losin g points. On th e terrain test , downhill on th is day's run . H in es mad e it through th e fastest , p icking up a 544-point score . That was quite a bit faster than th e two closest scores whi ch went to Turnidge (576) a nd Howell (580). The loo p speed average was bumped up to 24 mph, gi ving th e riders a half an hour less to co mp lete a rid e that was rive miles longer. None of the major contenders lost a ny route points. The final motocross saw Turnidge post th e best rive laps or th e da y a t 979 seconds. Aga in Howell got a less than perfect sta rt, but closed in on Turnidge a t th e end for the secondbest MX at 983 seco nds. Hines let William Perkins run ahead or him in their heat, but the 1000 points Hines was credi ted wi th were few enough to give the Massachussetts rider the lowest score or the weekend. "No major problems," said Hines after the end or the second day . "I didn't go all that well in the oncourse special test, but that was about it. It was a good event; I enjoyed it." Cranke lost three minutes out on the course, but still turned in a respectable 3873 to win 80cc Intent. Ironically, he lost no route points the day before, inspite of hitung a tree
