Afte r being dropped 10 seco n d, Pa rker held th at p osition for th e rest of th e 20-lap race, but beh ind h im things sh u ffled arou nd a bit. Garth Bro w held third for n in e laps. but on the 10th tour o f th e half-mile ova l G raham and Shobert slip ped by Bro w and pressured Pa rker. T he 14th lap en ded with Springsteen h olding a huge lead. one th at saw him cro ssing th e start / fin ish line a nd d iving into turn o ne as h is p ur suers ex ited turn fou r. T ha t la p a lso marked the en d o f th e race for Shobert, who dropped o u t while running fourth . " I' m not sure wh at broke. but I think th e front pi ston let go ," said Shobert after the ra ce. T he fo llowing lap sa w Eklu nd , wh o had been circu la ting in l Sth position, ret ire fro m th e ra ce. When asked wha t he th o ught had brok en , the former cha m p sai d. " Wha t broke? Wh o said some th ing broke?" H e th en displayed a smile and sai d. " Intern al in juries. Yeah, put that in - internal inj uries." Shobert's retireme nt moved Go ss into fourth an d th e top four spots were set- Sp ri ngsteen, Parker . Graham and Goss. Bro w held down fift h on th e 14th lap , but began to slip towards th e back o f th e pack . droppi n g to n inth on th e 15th lap. and th en ou t of th e ra ce a fter th e 17th la p . The ch eckered fla g gr eet ed Springstee n. who crossed the line nearly a straigh ta way ahead of Parker, Graham a n d Goss, who were fai rl y cl ose togeth er . Finishing fifth. a di sta nce bac k, was Gary SCOll. wi th Mertens , Jorgensen , Far ris, Rausch and Boody rounding o u t the to p 10. Huggin g h is teamm a te Parker . Sp ringsteen said. " It was a good fast track, an d it sure was n ice to h ave good h alf m ile racing two weeks in a ro w." Third place finisher G ra ham said, " I though t I co ul d catch a nd pass SCOll for seco nd, but I didn 't want 10 tak e an y chances . I played it coo l beca use I didn 't wa nt to sli p off th e gr oove. Third beat s fo urt h a nd th ird pays more poi nts th an fourth every time."
