Bubba Shobert took over the lead when Morehead retired, follo wed closely by Ra usch . Bu t Goss was charging through the field and on the sixth lap he passed Shobert and Rausch in turns three-four and took the lead for good. Shobert and Rausch followed him across the finish line. As he accepted a trophy courtesy of Taylor & Messick, the Harrington John Deere dealer, Goss said, "Three heats so far and we've made it three wins in a row for the Harley-Davidson team. I hope we can repeat that in the main." Pole sitter Ted Boo dy pulled the holeshot at the start of the fourt h and final heat, but it was Tim Mertens with the lead as the fie ld crossed the start/finish line at the end of the first heat. "Ted had the lead down the bac kstraight, but h e go t sideways in turn three and I bumped him. I didn't mean to do that, but that moved him out and I was in front," said Mertens after the race. Boody recovered and held on to finish second despite pressure from Graham, who finished third. 10 Semis Veteran Gary Scott, who had finished fourth in the first heat, led each and every lap of the 1O-lap first semi. The win moved SCOtl into the National. Steve Lawson, Kidd and Chuck Sp ringsteen fo u g h t for seco nd throughout the race and while Springsteen had the spot when the white flag was waved, he got out of shape in turns three and four and en ded up fourt h behind Scott, Lawson and Kidd. The second semi was a heartbreaker for Matt Rozowicz who led the first eight laps, but was dropped to seco nd at the finish by veteran Alex Jorgen sen. Jorgy repeated his cushion ride of the previous weekend 's race at Louisville to score the win . "The track is getting smoother, but it 's a lso getting a groove," said Jorgensen after his crowd-pleasing ride. Last Chance Qualifier Rozowicz led every lap of the Last Chance Qualifier, aboard his Condor Trading/Sure-Fire/Wiseco/Bell-sponsored XR 750 to grab the last transfer to the main. Ro b Crabbe and Lawson finished second and third, respectively, but Morehead finished the race on the sidelines, having pulled out of the race af ter only one lap. earl Pat rick, the man behind More head's KK Supply /Storz /D's Leathers/Fitzwater Sales/Sisemoresponsored Harley, said, " It lost fire in the heat, but then things just got progressively worse. It's time for us to regroup." Junior Invitational Ron Andrews earned the pole position for the 12-lap Junior In vita tional race, but it was fellow Virginian Mark Hartley who led every lap and won by a wide margin. Billy Norfleet finished second after running in that spot throughout the race, but he was pressured all the way. Andrews challenged Norfleet for nine laps, but was dropped to fifth towards the end of the race by Tony Harwell, who finis hed third, and Tony Grady, who took fourth.
