T he less than desirable co nditions di d no t sp oi l Ron n ie Prado 's initiatio n into th e Expert class as h e put in two determined efforts that netted him seco nd money ove ra ll. McCaskill su rprised Pra do with a .$25 bonus an d made a standing o ffer o f th e sam e money to an y rider who breaks into th e top thr ee in hi s first outing as an Expert. Prado gained th e runner- up position behind the Honda of Ro n Du n fee, who won both motos. An erra nt radiator hose put H u n ter Carothers in th e p its and Dunfee in the lead on th e la st lap of the fir st moto af ter Carothers had led every circuit o f th e fir st heat. " T h a t' s what you call ro tte n lu ck, " a dejected Carothers mu tte red as h e su rveyed h is side lined YZ250. U p on closer irisp ection , th e damage was m ore serio us than he first ca lcu la ted, a n d Carothers was for ced to go to a less than co m pe ti ti ve back-u p bike for mo to two . Prad o fought his way aro u nd Ti m Gatl in and J erry Farmer an d the n got invol ved in a four lap struggle wit h Tommy Pavelka. By th e time h e got clear o f Pavel ka , Prado co u ld o n ly watch Du n fee a n d Carothers fro m the di stance as the two closed ou t th e mota . Carothers' DNF in the first heat put him o u t o f th e o verall pi ctu re, and Fa rm er fin ish ed th ird behi nd Dunfee a nd Prad o . Donn ie Prad o took ove ra ll h on or s in th e 250cc No vice class a fter a two m oto battle with Andy Thompson. Thompson led every la p of th e fir st encounter wi th Prado in th e second slot. When th ey came back for the next clash, th e posi tions were reversed and Prado got th e n od for the top trophy by dint o f better p os iti on in the deci din g ride. Keith Kiyo ta (VF750F) and Aar on T urner (GS 750) dueled for eig h t la ps on th is 2.2 m ile co urse . At the halfway point Kiyota 's de ter mination had his Int ercep to r 's sli cks visib ly slid ing under th e stra in o f h is co rne ring. Still . Stevenson mainta in ed hi s lead.
