Ca lifornian Chris Carr led a California 1-2-3-4 sweep in the Novi ce main event on hi s Jorgy 's /Shoei/N -D/Hi Point /Bl enzall Can-Am , beating Chad Felici o an d Mike Arthur. Novice ac tion ki cked off th e $4000 program o f main events, but was marred bv a horrible crash o n th e second lap. Six riders wen t down in a heap a nd it took quite so m e time to cl ear th e febris. On th e resta rt, it was San ch ez putting his wat er-cool ed Honda into th e lead over fell ow Cal ifornians Carr, Arthur a nd Feli cia. Carr moved by Sanch ez on th e downhill sectio n an d proceeded to pull a way , with the fightin g go ing o n betw een San ch ez, Fel icia, Arthur and Rob ert H orban, one of three Oregonians in th e m ain. The to p four were providing quite a sho w for th e spectators wh o saw Carr ride smoo th a nd p reci se, wh ile Felicio settled hi s di spute with Arthur for second. Carr coll ected th e win over Feli cia, Arthur, Sanch ez, Horban an d Yamaha rider Jim Anderson . Fitzhugh an d Benn ett led th e Juniors into turn one, with th e parade of riders ramming from th e rear consisti ng o f David Whiting, Ben Zacharian and Harry Thomas. Bennett wa s riding the wheels o ff his 600cc Honda in search of a passing lin e on th e much-less-than-h alf-mile steep lechase co urse. Bennett and Fit zhugh battled lap a fter lap and Fitzhugh was reall y on th e gas until being cl ip ped by Bennett . He went down , putting third-placed Zach arian into seco n d, som e dis tance beh ind Benn ett. Wh it in g co ntro lled th e third spot, with Don Wil son and Du ane Gerrard dicing for fourth a hea d o f Thomas a nd Husqvarna 's J eff H arsha. Bennett crossed th e line for th e win , hi s fourth straight in Northwest TT ac tion, over Californian Zacharian , Whi ting, G errard, Wil son , Thomas and Harsha. Word got all of his 750's power to the ground at th e green light in th e Expert's 15-lap main event, with Ra ndy Green, Charlie Barkman, Fay and John Wi ncewicz in tow. Word was hoping to tak e hi s second Regional TT in a row , but Hurst had other ideas and came blazing down the hill to challenge the HarleyDavidso n rid er for the lead. Word kep t the lead for two more la ps unti l Hurst nipped pas t coming down th e hi ll on the inside line to dazzle th e 2500-plus specta tors on hand. Fa y a n d Green were a lso doing th eir part a t keep ing the fans a wa ke a nd rattled h andlebars for th e entire race over a Kir k Stro ng/ Ra n dy Skiver/'Thomas McCullough war which looked lik e a mini -National. Fay pulled away from Green to seu te-m to third all by him- New Mexico-Colol'ado-Wyollling-Montana-Nol1h Dakota -Soath Dallot Central Pipeline self as Strong m oved up a not ch to chase .G reen to th e checkere d flag . Coupe caps Marysville MX By Sue Ellis MARYSVILLE, CA, MAY 22 This weekend's Marysville motocross race, held at the "E Street" track was a hot one. Temperatures wer e up and racin g was fierce. The 125cc Expert cla ss saw Cory Ca ntalo u pi pulling th e hol esh ot in rnot o o ne. Cantaloup i held th e lead for a lap, but the n William Harrisonsponsored Steve Vlahos ca me arou nd in first. H alfway th rough the rnot o , Honda-mounted Dave Co u pe took th e lead a fter movin g up th rough th e pack. Vlaho s rem ained seco n d a nd Rodney Harrigen wa s third. At the chec kered, the pl aces rem a in ed the same . Th e second m oto had Mike J ohnsto n, Jim Cressa , and Ca n ta lou p i fir st, seco nd and third a fter one lap. On the second la p , Coupe an d Vlahos had pushed th eir wa y up into second a nd th ird. Coupe moved up 10 firs t and remained there until the finish , as d id Vlahos in second . J oh nso n took third. The 250cc Expert cl ass had Coupe o u t in front in the first turn with J oe y Schlag seco nd and Randy La sh th ird . Bouck hammers home at Hungry Horse MX By Pat Salomon H UNGRY HO RSE , MT, MAY 15 H un gry Horse motocross fou nd 'h u ngry' riders going a ll ou t for points, tro phies a nd Expert cash payback on th is rai ny Sunday morning. The track is part ly timbered with uphi lls and downhi lls , two sp ine jolting double jumps in a ro w, wh oops and h igh speed stretches a ll laid down o n sandy -to-gra vel so il. T he sta n is " ha iry" with a lon g fast ru n, a hard righ t arou nd so me trees, left again and down a steep dip. Bill Weaver piled up here and en ded up with a fractured leg lat er in th e da y. The Mini riders a lways d raw a spectator crowd 10 see th ese determ ined pint-sized riders doing th eir thin g . The Super-Mini rid ers were o ut for wins, an d in th e fir st moto Sh ane Hart battled it o u t with Ben Guth (H a n) for th e hol esh ot . Han is famous for hi s spee dy sta rts , a nd h e held o ff Bill y Bou ck (Yam ) for a lap, but then Bouck came charging o n hi s yello w machine an d left the rest of th e riders far behind. Carl Miller (Ya m) , Hart a nd Derek Melachar (Ya m) vied for placings with Mi ller hanging in for seco nd an d Derek capturing th ird. The seco nd moto saw Han again ma stering the holeshot and racing tight with Bouck again ta king the lead for th e first fo u r la ps. It looked like Bouck had bagged th e win wh en . just a few feet from the checkered flag, buzzed by Bouck . Behind Bouck was Melachar and Hart. T he overa ll win went to Bouck, seco nd went to Mi ller. Thi rd went to Melachar. The Mini Beginner riders buzzed away from the start, and in the first moro , Yamaha -mounted Clay Kaiser, Travi s J ohnson a nd Dane! Washburn dr ew into th e lead with Kaiser pulling th e ho lesh ot . J ack Gabelhausen soon thread ed through th e pa ck and took hi s Yamaha up to first place. Johnson cha llenged, but Gabelhausen put space betw een th em to show that he was in cha rge. The second mo to was much th e same as the first one wit h some of the you nger riders ha ving trou ble in th e sandy ar eas a nd requiring ad u lts 10 give them a push over the next hill.
