As th e starter sig na led th e 250cc Pros to light th eir engi nes, among the " Wrecking Crew" was "old fa ce" Edd ie Perry on board a Yamaha from Go le ta. The real "old man " showed no respect as Ken Zahn bla sted hi s Pacific Brass Foundry Honda into the lead up the hill. Russ Wageman powered his KX250 into second by turn two . Dropping down towards the little pond, Wageman kept his coo l and darted outside then inside while clipping a tre e forced Zahn to the outside. That a dva n ta ge 'was all Wageman needed, and he flew to a pull-away first. KeIlY Pugmire and David Lynch kept Zahn al ert as they pushed their Hondas closer a nd closer to finish third a nd fourth at the checkered. Round two saw Zahrt muscl e his way into th e first co rn er for a repeat ho leshot. This time Zahn was read y for Wagem an and sh u t the door at th e tree. Zahn found th e cooling a ir to his liking a nd moved to a five-second adva ntage. Th roughout the 14-lap go , Wagem an seemed to stru gg le with slower riders a nd the nippin g o f Pugmi re a nd Lynch .
