VALENCIA, CA, MAY 13 Racin g under the lights at Indian Dunes is back and with it an anxious crowd of racers. The California Racin g Club ho sted their fir st ni ght race of th e year, a n d due 10 th eir o rgani zatio n and no a m bu la nce runs, th e event was over at a decent hour. Many ra ced tonight while o the rs wer e saving th eir bikes a nd bodies for Sunday's Dunestown cla ssic. Profitin g from that were R ick Maki, of th e l25 cc P ro class, an d Rod ney Morrison, who ra ced to win in th e 250cc Pro class . Maki, mounted on an International Yamaha, proceeded to win both rnotos o f the 125cc Pro class. J ohn Dru ry took his Arai H elmets /Ultimate Leathers-supported Yamaha to a pair of seconds. R u ss Wageman has been racing more than any Pro around an d made tonight his third race this week. Wageman put his Kawasaki behind Drury in both motos, which la nded him third. T he 250cc Pro class was so mewhat mo re exc it ing with event ua l winner Mo rrison having to work h is wa y 10 the top. Leading th e first ro u nd of action was J im Sen del bach o n h is Crossroads Hon da. Sen del bach started to fade a n d Morrison took over ahead o f Randy Commons. Ni ck Ath ans a nd Sendelbach . At ha ns hasn 't raced since la st seaso n , yet wh en the ga te dropped for th e seco n d moto , Atha ns took th e holeshot, H e held th e lead for one lap till Morrison slid by him. Athans was in second till h e crash ed on a sa n dy corner and Commons flew by him. Athans finished third. Two firsts gave Morrison th e top cas h ahead of Commons , Athans and Sendelbach . John Nolind, who lists A BC Wide WOTld of SPOTts as his sponsor, aboard a Cycl e P roducts West Ho nda, clinched the 500cc Interm ed ia te title. In the first moto Doug Taft took hi s Thousand Oaks Yama ha to the wi n . Nol ind assumed tha t he had the h oleshot, but when the bikes turned the first corn er, Taft had co ntrol. Nolind's front brak e cable was bin di ng u p , yet even with cable trou bles he still took second place behind Taft with Chris Bercaw in third. Fixing the ca bl e problem, Nolind was able to lead and win the final moto over Taft and Berca w. His 2-1 tally was good enough for the top honors, with Taft being the runnerup a nd Bercaw landing third. Rare is it that one ca n tak e a six th place in th e fir st moto and still land th e o vera ll victory. Brian Felix did j ust th at in th e l25cc Novice class. Th e Motocross Ra ce Logs ' rider placed sixth in th e lead round in which Ri ch Ll oyd rode the best. In th e final round it was Felix all th e wa y with a three-man battle going between Joe Clancy, Gary Yoshino and Mike McCleneghan. Disastro usly, McClenegh an fell on a downhill stre tch and G lenn Gordy was unable to avoid him and flipped his Kawasaki while doing a handstand. While those two en ga ged in a hot discussion as to who sh ould h ave done what, the o th ers co ntinued 10 race. Yoshi no took over second place ahead o f Craig White. MAY 13 Twelve riders lined th e starting gate for th e start of both motos in th e I25cc Intermedi ate class, a n d by nights end. it was Sean Corco ran (Su z) who went home with th e go ld from Corona Raceway. Wh en th e gate dro p ped for th e sta n of moto one, it was Scou Mapes (Ka w) who jammed into th e lead. HOI in pursuit were Corcoran, Mark Lopera (Yam) , Greg Bender (H on) and Dave Bender (Hon ). By th e end o f lap one Mapes had stretch ed h is lead whi le th e rest of the pack battled . Greg Bender put heavy pressure on Lopera during th e fir st few laps, until Lopera fin all y gave in an d gave third to Bender. Bender then set af ter Corcoran. The two d uelled hand lebarto-handlebar. It was n 't u ntil the white-flag lap that Ben der made his mo ve a nd passed Corcor for seco nd . Ma pes cru ised an 10 a n easy victory fo llowed by Ben der, Corcoran an d Lepera. Lopera took a n early lea d at the start of moto two a head o f Corcoran, Ma pe s and Chris P ill o w (H on) . On th e third la p Mapes dropped out of th e rac e, handing third to P ill ow, but, on the n ex t lap, both Da ve Bend er and Paul H erma n (Kaw) sn uck by P illow. On th e next time around , Co rco ra n sli p ped by Lopera, taking over th e lea d. The rem a inder o f th e race was tight , bu t Corco ra n m ana ged 10 hold o n for th e victory. Lopera took second foll owed by Dav e Bender and H erman.
