MAY 15 Suzu ki Co untry 's Steven j ohn stone (Suz) used a 1-2 co mbina tion to cap ture th e win in th e I25cc Novice class today at De- • 46 Anza Cycle Park. The a ctio n began a t th e sta rt of m oto o ne wh en 'Da n iel La my (H on) sho t into the lead inc hes a hea d of J oh nsto ne, Tom Po povich Jr. (Hon) a nd Chris Mickl os (Hon) . By th e end o f lap o ne , Joh nstone had a lrea dy sn uck by Lamy, taking over th e lead . O n th e same lap Mickl os wen t down , droppi ng back to seventh. Nex t go-aro u nd, Popovich also slipped by Lamy for secon d . Mea nwhile mak in g hi s way up through th e field was Matthew Alloy (H on), Alloy had con trol of th e th ird spot a t the ha lf-way point wh ile glued to Popovich 's rear fender . Th e tw o battled ove r seco n d thro ug hou t the rest o f the moto. On the fin a l la p they were as close as ever. T hen, Alloy slipped by Popovich for seco nd . T he win went to J ohnstone followed by Alloy, Popo vich , La my and J oe Ramirez (Ho n) . The seco nd mo to holesh ot went to Johnstone whi le Popovich , Mickl os a n d Lamy pursued. With o n ly two laps to go, Micklos stu ffed hi s H o nda by J ohn stone. Micklos held on to take th e win a head of J ohnston e, Alloy , Popovich a nd Ra m irez. In the 125cc Int erm ed iat e class, Ka wa sak i-m o u n ted Kim Douglass tallied to a 2-1 co mbi nation to capture th e win. T h e turnout was d own with nine ra ces instead of 13. The P ro contestan ts were let loo se on th e track durin g ra ce four wi th staggered starts. T odd Peterson wa s read y to wi n and n ot damaged, with a sma ll excep tion of skin ned knuck les th at he received fro m a previous race. The go ing was easy for Peter son in th e 250cc Pro class as h e raced agains t just one rider , Shawn Pl ayer. R uss Wagem an is one of the to p 125cc P ro rid ers in th e so u th la nd and he wi ns o ften bet ween Ind ian Dunes and Asco t. Tonigh t was h is very first race a t O CIR a nd th e sta di u m style track was something that Wageman fo und cha llenging. DG /Kal-Ga rd sponsored Wagema n was ru n ni ng in thi rd wi th the sta rt of the first l25cc P ro moto. Taking th e lead pos itions were Tracy Meeks a nd Taylor Marcell, which made it a Kawasaki ra lly 1-2-3. Team T a mm mem ber J im Bro d ie was havin g h is first race a t OCI R for thi s season a nd, bein g m ore familiar with th e stadi u m jumps, h e promptly pa ssed Wa geman over th e dou bles. It was th en Meeks, Marcell and H onda ace Brodie. Ma rcell tri ed to stu ff hi s ma chi ne int o th e co rn er by the start before lead er Mee ks, but unfortunat el y h e fai led . Marcell h it the dirt an d ga ve h is runner-up spot to Brod ie. Wageman adv anced to third with Marcell in la st in th is class o f on ly four rid ers. Marcell took a ha rd kn ock in th e first mot o, but in the fin al event it was Meeks wh o too k a bad o ne. Meeks took th e h o lesh ot wi th Brod ie ru nning seco nd. By the en d of the fir st lap Marcell fou nd hi s wa y by th e H on da ace . After weeks o f watchi ng Ma rcell race, it is obvious that h e kno ws how to sai l over the stadium j um ps fearlessly. On the next la p he held on the thrott le a nd flew past leader Meeks. It was a let do wn for Meeks to have lost the lead a nd he sta rte d to ta ke cha nces with h is downfall occurring o n th e whoops right a fter th e fin ish lin e. Marcell had the lead with Wagema n ge tti ng th e hang o f th e track an d hound in g him th e whole wa y.
