Friend, Olsen,
Gikling grab BRA/
Osage MX wins
By Brian George
OSAGE, WY, MAY 15
Newcastle Motorcycle Clubrnembers, headed by President Robin
King and Track O fficia l Eddie
Porter, worked week-long on
the Osage Motocross Track in preparation for round six of the Borderline
Racing Association's 2l-race 1983
motocross series, and the revised circuit, run backwards, kept riders busy
trying to master the fast, sandy course.
Skies remained cloudy throughout
the afternoon , but warm temperatures were on hand until late in the
day, when several storms ran through
the area as the last moto or the event
crossed the finish line.
In the Pro fessiona l action, Spearfish Honda's Mike Friend looked as if
he would have all of the glory in both
the 125 and 250cc classes, bu t a stiff
second-mote challenge in the I25s by
Black Hills Yamaha 's Todd Gikling
kept Friend Irorn sweeping all four
motos and both classes overall, as
Gikling took the second moto in the.
l25s and the overall to Friends 1-2
tally, but Friend flat roosted all over
the 250s , winning each moto with
over a 20-second lead over runner-up
Gikling.

ish. Riders were thrilled with the
completely new supercross-style race
track. Double jumps, bumps and root
high berms made for a lot or exciting
action as well as a few spills.
Twenty-one l25cc Experts lined
up for their first rnoto and watched
Mike Boston's Kawasaki pull a clean
holeshot. Corey Cope struggled to
keep pace as the two pulled away
from the pack. Cope eventually Iell
in some mud which dropped him
back to fourth. National number 52,
David Weak. moved up to second
after a mediocre start. Meanwhile,
Boston had lapped most of the pack
by the flag.
In moto two Boston again got the
holeshot with Weak running second.
Fans anticipated a battle between the
two, but Boston pulled away about
t~o seconds per lap for a convincing
Win.
Boston again blasted to first in the
250cc Experts with John McKinney
in second. Don Wipr new past
McKinney to challenge Boston, but
ended his race day with a bad crash
on the£ront jump. Wipf was taken to
the hospital where x-rays determined
he had some bruised ribs. Doug Murray slipped by McKinney to finish
second. while Bosto n enjoyed a half
lap lead at the finish ,
The second moto was also a Boston
benefit with Murray and McKinney
finishing a respectable second and
third.
