Simmet simmers at Woodland Gold Cup By Bria n Barnes WOODLAND, WA, MAY 15 More than 200Amateurs packed Woodland Winter Track for the second race of the 1983 Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup 52 and action couldn 't have been better. With the Yamaha and Kawasaki Support teams in attendance northwest motocrossers got a rare chance to show off their talents in front of the big factories. The SOcc Expert class found Rick Simmet taking a well-deserved win with his 3-1 tally. Oren Bra y finished in the runner-up spot via two second place finishes. Larry Ward, last week 's winner at Seattle, won the first moto, but enco untered problems during the second moto, finishing fifth and giving him th ird overall, Darren Rogers took th e SOcc Intermediate class wi th h is first moto runner-up placing a nd second moto wi n. Suzuki-mounted 'joel Sit ts was second overall and Mike Waldner placed third overall. Les Yocum took hi s seco nd straight lOOcc Expert win ove r Bill Rudge, whi le Todd Lusk took the lOOcc Intermediate win over Grant Bergstrom and Garrett Powers. Twenty-seven riders battled in the 125cc Expert class with Kent Kaw asa ki 's Lonn Inman a n d Jimm y McMann taking the top two positions. Yamaha-mounted David Bailey was third, Roger Sherrill fourth a nd Mark Simmet was fifth. The 125cc Intermedi ate class found Ri ch ie Lee a nd Bru ce Barnes tradin g wins a nd runners-up posi tions, wi th Lee's seco nd-moto win g ivi ng him th e overa ll. Brad Bruns gassed his Suzuki to victory in the I25cc class and Larry " Dash " Dashiel roosted the Open bikes on his Honda CR4S0 . Coupe ca me out o f turn one first in th e opening 500cc Pro rnoto with Bob Shaffer following. Halfway through the second lap, Dashiel passed Shaffer and by the wh ite flag lap Dashiel had closed in on Coupe and was trying to stick a wheel underneath him. But Coupe got the checkered before " Dash" could pass. Kelly Barry took third place. Dashiel hol eshot rnoto two as Coupe diced for po sit ion with Barry. Dashiel pulled a small lead and won wh ile Coupe held Barry off to take second. Cory Cantaloupi flew out in front Ior th e first few laps of th e 250cc Pro moto but Coupe slipped by and put some distance on Cantal oupi to tak e the win. Dave Wood followed Cantaloupi to the finish for third. Shawn Walkingstick was fourth . Moto two was all Coupe's as he led from wir e to wire. Wood began to pressure Coupe in the second half or th e moto but was for ced to settle for seco nd. Jim Wooten fin ish ed third. Ca nta lo u p i went do wn in th e first turn a nd ended th e moto in seventh , still good eno ug h for third overa ll. T he first 125cc Pro mot o was won by Eric Liddell as he hol eshot a nd stayed o u t front to th e finish . Mike Wenzel held seco nd for th e firs t two la ps. T he n, as Cou pe passed h im over the double jumps , the y " kissed " in mid-air, Wenzel came dow n sideways , which resulted in the shock linkage sna p ping o ff o f the frame and the sh ock thrusting itself into th e eart h , en di ng u p assu ming the sha pe o f a pretzel. Expensive bummer . Coupe fin ish ed seco nd, Brad Bruns was third and Steve Vlahos gassed hi s new Honda to a fourth. Although Coupe bega n th e second moto in the lead , he diced with Liddell and Vla hos for three laps until Bruns passed for th e win. Coupe was seco nd ag ain wh ile Vlahos flew to a third. Amateur hopefuls attack Mulkey MX By Brian Barnes McMINNVILLE, OR, MAY 14 The northwest's 1983 Youth and Amateur Kawasaki Qualifiers were held this weekend at Mulkey ORV Park. Riders from Washington, Oregon , Idaho, California and even Alabama showed up to do battle for positions a t th e Amateur National Championships to be held later thi s yea r a t Loretta Lynn 's Dude Ranch. Entrants competed in three motos with th eir top two scores being tallied for overall po sitions. Wi th both the Kawasaki and Yamaha Competition Support vans in a ttendance riders had a cha nce to show their Sluff in front of some important people. . In th e 65cc 7-11 Stock a nd Modified classes, Oregon's Jeff Daily came out on top, scoring two wins in each class. Th e next two riders traded seconds a nd thirds in eac h cla ss. Ala bama 's Ashley Sharer flew in to compet e, with hi s bike su p p lied by Kawasaki, a nd fin ished thi rd behind Butch Smith in both th e Stoc k a nd Modified first rn o to.
