So despite the presence of a full moon in the sky and the return of two motorcycle maniacs - Bobby " Insane" McLain and Danny " Berzerko" Becker - it was pretty much business as usual. It all began stranger than fiction , however, as riders began to fall like rain. Four ate dirt in th e first ra ce. Somehow Rob Pfetzing managed to avoid a fallen John McNeill and paid for his courtesy by landing upside down on the bales. Shane McDonald dumped it , too, but showed the good sen se of timing to do it aft er he won his heat. Lou Kreisberg fell before his Third Division heat , then John Dun n fell while in first. Things mellowed o ut th ereaft er; on ly 12 crashes all night , no o ne hurt, and Ventura maintained its record as a sa fe tra ck. Becker, here for th e fir st time sin ce 1981, raced th e Ventura Sharks in 1975 a nd even th e Ventura Ch argers way back in '72, and ha s been a local favorite since '71. A sick bike prevented him from making ei ther main, but he promised to try again next tim e. Meanwhile back a t the races, Ayers , too good for the IO -yard -lin e, thrashed everyo ne severel y to win his heat and the semi by miles. In th e main, th e ever -im p ro vin g Scott Talkington outgated Ayers , th en passed MeDonald by turn one a nd began to pull away. But Ayers, with a wild lap, ca ug h t Talkington and began to apply th e heat. T alkington d idn't wilt until the fourth lap when h e went too wide in turn four, Ayers whizzed by and th e crowd roared. Ayers' sponsors - George Wenn a nd B&F Im ports - were thrilled to no end. In Scratch racing, Faria a nd Sam Ermolenko mad e it to the mai n unbeaten. Faria got th e start, but Ermolen ko ca ug h t him on turn two , then bobbled ever so sligh tly. That was eno ugh for Faria as he had it in th e cooler by turn th ree. Faria, who won ·10 trophies here last yea r, won three in a row once last season. McLain, Ventura County's lone First Divi sion rider , had not ridden or even practiced all yea r, and rode surprisingl y wel l. H e wa s good enough to make both mains, but landed in both consys instead. A la stlap broken chain cost him in hi s Handicap semi, and the Bud Man took hm ou t in a Scr tch semi . T he a referee th en took out th e Bud Man . In th e Local s Only Dep artment: Walt Farnum enjoyed h is Second Divi sion debu t thoroughly and won h is hea t a nd the mai n .
