Bakershows instant replay at Good Times GP By Jeannette Fisher PERRIS, CA, MAY I The Southland Racing Association's Good Time GP at Perris Raceway got off with a roar as th e Open class started a day a t the races. Brian Manley took th e hol esh ot wi th Mik e Bak er in a cha lleng in g secon d. By lap two Bak er moved into fir st a nd Manl ey held second as Crai g Adams and Ra ym ond Ca tes fo ug h t for third a nd fou rt h . Bak er led the way th rough to th e end an d Manley held seco nd unt il th e sixth lap wh en he dro pped way back. Ada ms moved into seco n d with Ca tes in a close thi rd . T hro ug hou t the rest o f the race Baker led an d Adams a nd Cates d iced th eir way throug h. At th e fin ish Bak er clai med first a nd Adams fini sh ed secon d , jus t in fro nt of Cates, who took third. As th e 250cc class ro u nded lap one , it was agai n Mike Baker in the lead. Dale Dondell , Crai g Adam s and G reg Fountain a ll foll ow ed with H opes o f an overa ll victory. Halfwa y th rough th e ra ce, with Bak er hol d in g fast to hi s lead , Raymond Ca tes moved hi s way throug h to seco nd. Dondelltried to keep u p in third . As the leader s co m pleted th eir last lap, Bak er fin ished with his seco nd victo ry for th e day. By th e 10th lap Th omas Shedden overtook Ayers for th e overal l. Ayers held on to second. At the fin ish She dde n led th e way with Ayers in a close seco nd . Th ird place was ta ken by Bill Dobbs. Ge ne Bald wi n too k the hol eshot and th e overa ll wi n of th e 80cc class. As McG ra w completed lap one, Bill H arris and Ha rry T hornberg held fa st to seco nd a nd third , By la p th ree Ri ck Wat son a nd Vern H eth replaced H arri s. a nd Th ornberg. At th e fin ish McG raw sti ll held th e overa ll a n d thus took the win. Yetto, Bradybattle at 0.37SunriseMX By Charleen Ho AD ELANTO, CA,MAY 8 A l25cc Pro battle between Randy Yetto and Ted Brady was one of th e highlights o f th e da y as th e AMA Di strict 37 mot ocro ss p ro g ram pa id a visi t to Sunrise Valley Cycle Park. The Veteran 's class paved th e way for so me of th e day's finest racin g. Kurt Dietr ick h ol esh ot th e first mo to . a nd sta rted to build a good lead until Dan Ayers decided to change th a t. Dietrick took it a way fro m Ayers a nd by th e fourth la p felt co m fortable. Meanwhile, Ayer s, Sa m G ro ce a nd Ronni e Gibson were a ll fightin g for seco nd. What mad e th is interesting was G ibson's machinery - a H on da XR four-strok e. Dietri ck maintained, wh ile G ibson flogged . pa st G ro ce. G ibson wa s o ut for bl o od as he bounced pa st Ayers, a nd G roce flew past Ayers . By the six th lap, Gibson' wa s ri ght o n Dietrick 's tail followed by G roce, Ayers a nd Wilson. Gi bso n co u ld ta ste the win as he hun g it o u t o n th e eig h th lap to overta ke Dietr ick. The or der o f finish wa s G ibson. Dietrick . Groce and Ayers. The seco nd mot a wa s even more inten se as G ro ce roosted th e start. Lap o ne saw G ro ce, Dietrick , Gi bson a nd David Wil son h ot to tro t. Groce a nd Dietrick were sparkling as th ey pulled away, exchangi ng po sit ions incessently. Then all of a sudde n G ibson came to life and passed Groce. Dietrick contin ued to maintain a s G ib son a nd Oroce d id th e swap-eroos. As lapped riders came into sight, G ib son ga ined groun d. The checkers were pulled for Dietr ick, G ibs on, Groce a n d Wilson with Dietrick taking th e win for th e da y. The progr am climaxed as th e P ro s comma nded th e day's a ttent io n. O pen Pro Eric MacCra cken was th e one to beat as he led the pa ck. Clarke " Bruce ~ Don Turk (46) leads the CMC 250cc Expert class start.. Baby" Colema n (Open) hung in there as Ri ch ard Sa nds (250cc), Ted Brady (l 25cc), Dane Wi ginton (O pen ) an d J ohn Rudder foll ow ed. J oey Bra y (250cc), Ra nd y Yeito (I 25cc), Tony Gome z (250cc), J oe Melt on a nd J im Sendelba ch (125cc) clung to each o ther. "Bruce Baby" Col em an was hot a s he led mo to two to the seco nd turn before spinning o u t. Sands. Wi gington , Brady, " Rad " Rudder a n d Yett a went by. Hudson Trucking was p roud of Brad y as he put the pressure o n Sands, bu t then Sa nd s succ u m bed to a blown cra n k. Th e sta ge was set a s Brady co m ma nded th e field of Yetto , Wiging ton ,' Bray. Gomez, Rudder , Se nd lebach a nd Col em an . Barn es Yamaha 's Yetta was darin g as he sta rted closing in on Brady, wh ile G omez passed Wiging ton a nd Bray. It wa s lap si x an d Yett a ga ined co ntrol as he passed Brady righ t a fter th e doubles. It was ver y tricky . Sen delbach, -C o mez a nd Wi gingt o n di ced a nd doubled qui te a few times. Parker breaks Canyon record By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, MAY 8 Dennis Parker, in a qualifi er for the NMA Ponca City nationals , broke a n end u ra nce record a t Canyon this weekend. H e signed up for . a n d fin ish ed . a to tal of 10 mot os. " Da ngero us Denni s" rode th e two Min i Ex pert classes a nd the 105cc class a lo ng with hi s first ride on a 125cc. H e ten aciouslv fin ished third a nd fourth in the Amateur class. The first mota of th e 125cc Arna -, teu r 'Stock class had to be restarted beca use o f a first turn wreck that left Sh awn Hilton wi th a sore co llarbo ne a n d Doug Butch er with a tweaked bike. O n th e restart, Scott Keyes took th e lead with Rob Ol son hustling in for second. By o ne lap, P arker, just fin ishin g an 80cc Expe rt mot a , slid into th ird . Todd H inson held hi s Yami e in fourth. Parker too k up the slac k beh ind Olson while Keith Watk in s took over fourth. Nea r th e fini sh Keyes. Ol son an d Pa rker sta rted to sp rea d o u t wh ile Wa tkin s got heav y.. pressure from Western H onda 's Bryan T a ylor. H e slipped by o n th e last lap for fourth. In the second mot a sta rt , Doug Butcher enjoyed a n early lead wi th Keyes in third behind Ol son. Keyes h ad hi s problems a nd dropped o ff th e pace, but st ill held th ird. Ol son push ed .Butch er, a nd took the lead nea r th e mi d -way point. But ch er pressured . bu t Ol son held up to it a nd kept th e win for the o vera ll. Keyes took second with hi s 1-3 finish a nd Watkins had th ird a fter hi s fou rth in th e second mot a . Pa rker ha d p robl em s a nd took 10th for a fourth o vera ll. Bryan Bruner took th e lead in th e first mota o f th e 105cc class. He had ea r ly pressure from t he n ewl ymounted Honda rider Shaun Kalas. Kal as slipped pa st for a shan time, th en Bruner regained th e lead o nce again . Kyle.Lewi s held a d istant th ird over a seem ingly tired Parker. Kal as dropped it and kicked it o ver in eno ug h time to stay a head of Parker. Lewi s was then in a strong 35
