The score was tied 48-48 when Kenny Carter and yo ung Neil Collins lin ed up in heat 17. T he latter mad e an electric sta rt, and with Ca rter sha dowing him all the way, Ame rica's top scorer, Dennis Siga los , was pushed into th ird pl ace. - USA needed a 5-1 from th e last race to force a tie, but En gland skip per Peter Collins a nd Mik e Lee pu t on a repeat of th e previous race over th e Moran brothers to give th e "home" team a 58-50 victo ry. It was touch a nd go all the way for Engl and as th e Amer icans were leading for mo st of the meeting, enjoying a six point adva ntage wh en th ey collected a maxi m urn 5-1 ra ce win by th e Morans in heat six, but by th e halfway point England had pulled back to square th e totals. Again the America ns pulled way with a 4-2 heat win in race II , only ha ve th e British answer back the same way in the next race. Sigalos paid th e price of loaning his bike to h is teammates in th e last few races. When lining up for the crucial heat 17, his clutch burned out, paving the way for victory "to England. John Cook had earlier kept up their hopes by ra cing to a heat win in the 16th race over Chris Morton. That win was half of Cook's point total, which showed the determination of the Americans.
