APR. 15 Karl Fern andez went ho me with the gold after taking h is H on da to a fla wl ess I- I victory in di vision one o f the 125cc Begin ner class tonight a t Corona Raceway. Fernandez had 10 co ntend with so me stiff co mpe titio n from Dan Hendricks (Suz) a nd J ay Birmingham (Suz), For th e start of moto o ne, Hendricks roos ted off with th e hol esh ot . Hot on H endri cks' rear fender were Ferna n dez. And y Stix (Ya m ) and Birmingh a m . H endri cks went down a n d dropped back to th ird a nd gave Fer nan dez the lead. By th e en d of lap two H endri cks had a lready sn uck by Stix for seco nd . Bir m in gh a m sl ipped by Srix on th e foll ow in g la p and took o ver third position . For th e remainder o f the race Fernandez managed to hold o n 10 hi s lead for the win. H endricks took seco nd while Birm ing ha m a nd Ri ch Mih alic (Suz) took third and fou rt h. H en dricks again jammed in to th e lead followed by Birm ingha m , Fernandez and Don Litt era l (H o n) . For th e firs t half of th e moto positions rem ained the same, but tight. T he turning po int of the race took place o n the third la p when H endrick s went down , dropping o u t o f the race. T hen Fernandez stuffed-it bv Birmi ngha m to tak e the lead. MEXI CO, APR. 17 As the checkered flag brought th e HiIltoppers Rosarito Beach Grand Prix to a n end, it wa s Wa yn e Martin of East/West M.C. who showed th e en d ura nce a nd skill to claim th e overa ll victo ry. On th e start, waves o f rid ers took o ff a t IS-second interv al s. Before th e start th e fir st ro w of Open Experts were bl essed and received a go od lu ck car na tio n for the ride. Rosarito mayor Carlos Becerra wa s honored with th e gr een flag to start o rr th e fir st line a nd wi th tha t the ra ce began. Lap one was co m p le ted in ap p ro xima tely 35 minutes, as Mike " Sizzfin " Sixbery led th e way with a lin e of Open Experts behind him. By th e end o f the seco nd lap Sixbery wa s o u t an d Craig Adams qui ckl y took over th e lead. Adams soo n dropped out on th e third lap, letting Dane Wiging- ton (H o n) move u p for th e overall posi tion. Dane held lip but he soon lost th e lead 10 Mart in . Martin brought hi s Hu sk y to th e front a nd left Wigingto n wa y beh in d , but th e H onda rid er was hol d in g fast to h is seco nd p lace p osition . At th e finis h, Martin had es ta blis hed qu ite a lea d but Wign in g ton h eld Paul Hu ffm an off for th e seco nd-place posi tio n.
