Prado, Shank control Motosport MX By Boots Shaner SAN ANTONIO, TX, APR. 10 Donnie Prado held off Chane McDonald in a wild, perfect day of racing at Motosp ort MX Park in the 250cc Novice class. 50 Prado didn't get th e hol esho r, but ga the red it a ll together about halfwa y through th e first moto to grab th e lead and hold it. McDonald wasn 't j ust ea ting dust whil e Prado did hi s stu ff by any m eans. He wa s pushing hard, espe cia lly in the second rnoto whe n he nearly got aro u nd Prado exce p tfor running o rr th e track . Whil e Donnie Prado did the deed in th e 250cc Novice class , brother Ron n ie matched th e feat by taking the ho n ors in th e 250cc Intermedia te class. Th e difference was that Ro n n ie just barely eeked out th e win over moto- batic Jeff Wilson. At o ne point in the last rn ot o , Jeff was on ly 10 feet behind Prado, on ly 10 be pu lled in each stra igh taway. T h e dead ly duo of Prado a nd Prado reall y showed off for Austin. Dal e Shank did it for the th ird month in a row as he ran by Ralp h R ust an d Tom Vicars fairly ha nd ily. They had p ushed ·h im pret ty hard last month. Rust and Vicars had a ba il ie ro yal for th e seco nd place slot. The whoopde-doos separated them a lillie in th e seco n d rnoto and let R ust tak e th e seco nd spot. In the l25cc Beg in n er class , Rod Kell y got the ho lesho t in both motos a nd had little troub le keeping it throughout th e whole sho w. The same was true for the second place rider Tom Eastwood. H .J. McCall roo k third a nd Eddie Sherwood ca me in fourth . In the l25cc Novice class a n upand coming rider by the name of Todd H ar gr od er stole th e show to mak e th e race of th e day. Ha rgro der took seco nd in th e first mot o whe n Do ug Bice showed hi m h is back end wi th a h itie fancy rid in g o f h is own. Bice skimmed by h im ea rly and h eld o nto it. T he seco nd moto saw Hargroder tak e it clea n an d clea r. Maybe it was th e G atorade. G ary Grose took th ird an d Daniel Villareal came in fourt h . T he Mini Sen ior class was a barnstormer. David Campbell took two firsts a nd Stefano Ul ric h took two seconds to nai l down those two positions p retty tight. Da vid Savoi and J oh n Bird song took th ird and fo urth . Som e o f Col orado's best were in a ttendance to attack the to ug h track. Ra n dy " Roc ket " Warren sta yed tigh t in the turns and rod e h is H on da to th e overall win in th e O pen Expert class, ahead of Chris Sunds tro m and J im Mitc hell. Warren settl ed for a seco nd in the first m ot o but stave d on th e th ro ttl e to ca p ture fir st in hi s seco nd ra ce of th e da y. Sun dstro m wo n the first rnoto but th en fell to third in th e second to g ive Warr en the overall. Albert Firestine, wh o rid es for Vickery Yamaha o f Den ver, added yet another win in th e I25cc Expert class. Firesti ne won th e overall with a 2-1 day, but he was pressured by a fin e rider named John Smith. J o hn turned in a 1.2 on his J &B-sponsor ed Yamaha . T im Buchli rode 10 two th ird pl aces on a nother Vickery Yamaha. Boo Stichter had a perfect day in the 250cc Expert class as he raced to firs t p lace fin ish es in both rnotos, riding for Fay Meyers H onda. Mitchell, th ird in th e O pen Experts, ch ased Boo all day bu t was on ly a ble 10 ta ke seco nd in bo th mot os. Warren .took two third place finish es to go a lo ng wi th h is O pen win. In rno to o ne of the 250cc Expert class Killion cha rged to th e lead with Rogers in hot pursuit. On lap seven Kill io n recovered from near di saster o n th e bowl turn jump. Rogers too k th e op port u n ity to slip by a nd held o n for th e chec kered . In rnot o two Ro gers grabbed the lead with Killion clos e behind. Roger managed to outlast Killion for first overa ll. J o h n Bersch p icked of f Les lie Elsi k on th e fina l la p of rno ro o ne after swappi ng p lace s severa l times during th e ra ce an d feel in g th e pressu re of Royce Danner in fifth p lace. After a misera ble 12th p la ce sta rt in the seco n d moto, Bersch m oved 10 fifth behi nd Elsik 's th ird and Danner 's fourth. Bersch claimed th ird overa ll. Th e l25 cc Expert class saw Mike Ma ley get th e holesh ot foll ow ed by Lee Urike, o n ly 10 go down o n th e seco nd lap a llowin g Uribe 10 take over first. Maley was back in co ntent io n by lap five only 10 cras h off th e bowl tu rn jump and break hi s wrist. U ribe cru ised Ior an easy win. Rod ney Dann er claimed seco nd place money over T erry Curtis. Darius Gramley once again dominated th e O ver 30-Enduro class and the 250-0pen Novice cla ss, taking first in bo th motes of th e 250cc class. He h ad 10 settle for th ird overall in th e O ver 30 class after a " Li te" refreshme nt stop back fired in rnot o o ne , forcing him to fi nis h fifth . Seco n d rnoto saw a n o-nonsen se firs t pl ace fo r Gram ley with Randy Lambert ta kin g seco nd for a first overall. For th e Opens, Rice Cycles' Dave Molder ca m e up with th e ov erall, despite a last moto ba ilie 10 the wire with Colorado's Dave Newell. The first moto o u t o f th e gate was th e l2 5cc Pro s; Todd G ikli ng ca me ou t in fro nt , follo wed by Mik e Frien d , Kell y O lsen , Sha n non Ivev, Cun y H yde, Wade Rice a n d J oren Boyce. Gikling 's lead was short-lived, h owever, as o n th e seco n d la p th e Yamaha riders went do wn in th e back sectio n o f th e co urs e, a n d bo th Fri end and Olsen flew by. From th ere it was a ll Friend; he dom in at ed th e remainder o f the mo to , tak ing hi s H o nda 10 th e wire virtuall y uncontested. O lsen held o n 10 second a t th e wire, wit h Gi kling remounting and fini shing up in third. Ladd Po itra grabbed th e holeshot in th e seco nd moto of th e 125cc Pro s. with Gikling, Fri end, h ey, .O lsen and Bo yce again right on his tail. Within one lap Gikling moved by Po it ra. as did Fri end, a nd the leaders set up a nothe r chase for th e front pos ition. Again , as the duo hit th e back section of the course, which wa s hardp ack ed and slippery in spots, G ik lin g went down one more time a nd gave Friend the lead o n the seco n d lap. Frien d wa sted no tim e in seizi ng co ntrol of th e race, stretch ing h is mar gin over ru nne r-up Boyce, who in turn had hi s hands fu ll wi th Ol sen . At th e wire it was Fr iend, Boyce, Ol sen , Cun H yde, Ladd Poitra a nd Sha n non Ivey with th e top six p ositions. O verall , it wa s Fr iend, O lsen and Bo yce with th e top three slot s.
