(Below) Mike Bast couldn't keep his Costa Mesa win streak intact, Pieper, Ormiston take Denver premier wins By Ernie Ferguson DENVER, CO, AP R. 16 Speedway Pro motions kicked off the 1983 indoor spe edway racing season before an exci ted National Western Arena crowd 26 of about 500 people. The crowd was treated to some great speedway action, as each year the racers seem to get faster and better. T hi s year another class has been added to the schedule, the Third Division class, and these ne w riders shou ld soon be challenging the First and Second Division racers. In the First Division Handicap main, Dave P iepe r ou traced five ot her riders to capture the main event. H e was chased by a real charger, Rick Steele, who too k a second, and by brother Ken Pi eper, who placed thi rd . T he First Division Scratch main was a d ifferent story with Scott Ormiston tak ing the crown, showing an aggressive a nd da ring style. Dave Pieper finished second in the Scratch main with Steele taking thi rd. Orrnis- ton took a first in four events and had to settle for second only once. Mark Head fought his way to first place in the Second Division Handicap main by ou tpointing second place rider Bill Postilio and third p lacer Joh nnie Zweyga rdt. The 1983 season prom ises to be a good one with some riders coming back from Florida wi th track time in the Wi nter Na tionals to add to their experience. With the Peipe r bro thers, Orm iston, Jimmy and Dennis Troudt a nd Bria n Hoel, not to mention a host of ot her good riders, this should be the most exciti ng seaso n ever for Colorado indoor speedway raci ng. Cook smokes Costa Mesa; breaks Bast's streak ByJim Brown COSTA MESA, CA, APR. 22 J oh n Cook broke the winning streak of Mike Bast Friday nigh t in one of the fastest Scratch mains so far this year. Cook and Bast both won their Scratch heats and ended up in Scratch semi together. Cook smoked Bast and then produced a carbon copy of that race in the
