Williams wai's at Corona night MX By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, APR. 4 Suzuki-mounted Jim Williams used a 3-2 combo to capture the win in tonight's 250cc Beginner class at Corona Raceway. The first mota saw Joe Janikowski (Han) shoot into the lead, pursued by Rob Kanel (Han), Jim Nelson (Han) and Larry Jones. During the first few laps the top three riders battled handlebar 10 handlebar. Williams, who got off 10 a sour 10th-place start, was making his move up through the pack. Atthe hal£way point, Williams started to put heavy pressure on Nelson. On the final lap, Williams finally zapped Nelson. Janikowski held on to take the win followed by Kanel, Williams and Nelson. Jim Stentz (Han) jammed into the lead at the start of mota two, just ahead of Jay Stine (Han), Tony Whitesill (Hus) and Larry Hall (Hus), By the end of lap two, Whitesill slipped by Stine for second. For the next three laps Stentz and Whitesill dueled, but two laps from the finish, Whitesill went down and dropped to eighth. After a slightly better sixth place start, Williams found himself in second after Whitesill went down. Williams held the throttle wide open to try and catch the leader in the final two laps. But time ran out as Stentz held on forthe win . Williams' secondmota second, however, gave him the overall. Casey Mahoney (Kaw) ran away to . a commanding win in di vision one of the Mini Beginner class by capturing the win each time out. Mahoney led every lap but the first one in both motos. A 3-2 score by Ronnie Martin (Kaw) gave him second while third went to Bret Stovall (Yam). In division two, a first-mota win and a second-mota second gave Kevin Bussey (Yam) the overall. OTs Miller, Gutierrez fastest at DeAnza By Bob Alloy RIVERSIDE; CA, MAR. 27 Things certainly didn't start out the way they should have at today's DeAnza Old Timer's motocross practice session. It would have to be called a disaster anyway you looked at it. About a . dozen bikes were stuck in thick, gooey mud up to the axles, and at least five had to be pulled out manually some with burnt out clutches to add insult 10 misery. At some point it was called to a halt and the track was rerouted to bypass the mud. . ' Dennis Rosenberg took off In a winning streak in the Master's class and kept his power on all the way to th e fimsh for first place. Ron Miller's Kawasaki came in at a fast pace too, . to claim second. In the second rnoto Miller took the holeshot and kept up such speed that he was unbeatable. He got first and Rosenberg took a speedy second. Junior Master Dick Burley is one of the winningest guys around, and true to form, he ran away with another first. Gabe Gutierrez filled up the second place slot. The second mota was a battle between Gutierrez and G eorge Spearing. There was some tricky ma~euv ering by both parties, but Gutierrez got through to first, Spearing got a well-earned second place. . In the Expert class it was Bob Crandall who won the prized first. Al Smith came in with a fast second. Meeks, Peterson, Sargent earn Pro OC'R victories By Steve Crosby EAST IRVINE, CA, APR. 7 For the second week in a row at Orange County International Raceway, some of the best racing of the night occurred after most of the crowd went home. The final 125 and 250cc Pro rnotos had everyone buzzing on a night that was filled with close races. The second week of the season drew another great crowd to OCIR for RACE-sanctioned motocross, While everyone was a bit surprised by the tight racing, they were more surprised by the unseasonably cold air that caused everyone' to bundle up with everything they had. - Texan Kyle Landrum took control of the first I25cc Pro mota with Todd Hoover and Craig Cable following. Tracy Meeks started back in the pack and picked off a rider a lap until he was in second in front of Hoover. Meeks then moved up to challenge fellow Kawasaki rider Landrum. Landrum did a good job of holding off Meeks ' attacks, but on the last lap Meeks doubled his way through the whoops just before the finish line and passed Landrum in mid-air for the win. Landrum settled for second with Hoover third. In the second I25cc Pro mota Chris Heinrich took the holeshot and held the early lead. Steve Burdette held second place for two laps before the Landrum/Meeks parade passed him. Heinrich, under pressure Cram the Kawasakis, went down when hecuta corner a little too close. Landrum had the lead with Meeks again putting the pressure on and doubling his way through the whoops. The white flag came out and Meek s slipped under Landrum in the first turn for a clean pass and the win. Landrum had to settle for second while Taylor Marcell was third overall with a 4-4. Todd Peterson blasted into the 250cc Pro first mota lead with Harley Hall and Danny Bartholomew chasing. Last week's winner, Bryan Maloney, was seventh after the first lap, but was third after the second. A lap later Maloney . moved into second th CaI A . with Hall third. That's the way they finished the first rnoto, ,a In the second mota Peterson again took the holes hot and built up a lead. Craig Cable started in second, but fell back to fourth on the third lap when Harley Hall and Maloney passed him. Peterson was signaled that he had a lead and to play it safe, but Maloney quickly passed Hall and set out after Peterson. By the time the white £lag came out, Peterson's lead had eva porated. Maloney dived inside in the turn before the big jump and emerged with the lead. Both riders turned up the gas. Coming in front of the grandstands and over the mudhole, Peterson left the throttle open and forced his way past Maloney in the hairpin turn. Maloney gave Peterson a dose of the same in the next turn and the pair banged just as they entered the stutterbumps. Peterson went into the pennant but kept himself up. Maloney had the lead for a second or two until he got out of shape and Peterson emerged with the lead in the next turn. Maloney tried to pass Todd back in the whoops, but overshot one and had to back off. Cable finished third in the moto and third overall with a 4-3. M Results · -rs 60 BEG: 1.
