Jimmy and Johnn y Johnson reallv got things going in th e main even t, They we~e passi!,!g and f!ghting from start to finis h with Cra ig Louis hot af~er them and just waiting for th e m istake that never came. T hey finished in that order. Hot shoe Willis McCoy too k up where he left off last year by winning th e 125cc fla t track main. Trace Poi son let Willie know that he was there as ~id Alan Powers. These guys get sen o us. The 250cc Amateur main was a barn burner with Eldon Hultgren. Jeff Harder and Rick Isbell pleasing th e fans with excellent racing. The track .surf.ace was a wide groove, meanmg nders could pass about an ywhere th ey wanted. Ross Downs changed from motocross to TT scra m bles thi s yea r, and every body fell in love with it. TT is just a smoo th motocross that yo u can really get racing on. Jimmy Holder came prepared to win hi s first TT. He entered the 80cc class and won it , then entered th e O p en class, and finished third in it. Trace Polson and Greg Teague threw dirt a t each other finishing in that order in the 8Oc~ class. Starting o ff th e 1983 seas on were th e [25cc Pro s. and out of th e ga te it was Ladd Poitra and LeeVern e Berry going into th e first rum . Poitra ili his first Pro race since moving ' u p from the Mini A wa rs, took the lead in th e second turn whil e Berry, Sh annon Ivey, Todd Gik ling and Ro la nd Girouix rounded out the top five. >Iv Gik li ng ma de the har dest charge ea rly in the first circuit, and as tti e pack head ed onto the up pe r portion of the raceway Gikling motored into fi~st a~ead of. Po itra , Ivey, Berry and Girouix, This lead was short-lived for the Black Hills Yamaha rider. h owever , for wh en he came back onto the lower secti on . the front end of his YZ kicked under in a fast lefr-hander, and Gikling went head-first 10 th e edge of a short drop-off. Poitra and lvey then fought for th e lead, and soon Ivey was in com m and, and Poitra began to fad e behind Berry. Gikling rem ounted in sixth, then proceeded to move int o fourth behind Po itra , and quickly shot into third before th e halfwa y mark. Back behind the leaders, Mik e Friend, wh o had . g<;m ~ down ~n th e opening lap, wa s picking off riders at an amazing rat e, and within four laps he had worked past Girouix for sixth pl ace . From th ere. the Honda pilot roosted by Po itra , a nd set after Gikling, who was fighting with Berry for th e runner-up slo t. Gikling displa ced Berry before Friend crashed th eir du el. Friend put th e moves on Berrv first . th en Gik ling, to move into s~cond. Ivey. who had not been able to com po und a su bstant ia l lead by this point. became th e next target for Friend . a nd within two laps Ivey had been dropped to seco nd an d Fri end wa s pull in g a way 10 a co mfo rta ble win . Gikl ing follo wed Friend 's pas s on Ivey a n d rolled h im self into th e runn er-up up spo t by th e en d o f qje race. Ivey had to settle for th ird ahead o f Berrv an d Po itra .
