The seco n d group didn ' t change m uc h, but up from Fe licio took first away from Hulbert go ing do wn the from straig h t. Chad Felicio took off out front and n ever lost it in th e main , although Hulbert, Beer and Springman were within striking di stance. Hulbert really pulled out all stops, and he and Felicio had a great race. although they were bobbling around in certain places, and more than once racing side by side. TIME: 4 :04 .e5 Whitehouse whips ARRA Willow 450cc class By Lori Tyson WILLO W SP RING S, CA , AP R . 3 Clint Whitehouse recover ed n icel y from a nasty p racti ce crash a nd put on one great show as he fought Mark Capell for th e 450cc Product ion title a nd won at the American Road Racing Association 's Willow Springs meet. Whitehouse was only o n e of many who fell during the da y because of reall y heav y winds that pl a yed havoc with the racers. But Cl int wa s in fin e form a s he took on Capell and h ad one of the tightest race s ever, winning by a half wheellength. In the Open Production race Tony Guest and Hi-Desert Kawasaki 's Mark Shelton duelled for second pla ce honors as Earl Rol off d id his u sual disappearing act to take the win. Ducati pilot Guest and Gpz-moumed Shelton reall y had i t out, a nd in th e end th e Duck was victorious. In the 750cc P ro duct io n class, J eff Tuuobene, fresh from sett in g a new track record a t th e Vegas track o n a 1980 Kz550, battled Open c1asser Bruce McFadden and 750cc clas ser Mark Thomas. McFarland's Suzuki ca me o u t a head to take 'th ird O pen class, a n d J eff to ok the che ckers to wi n the 750cc class. J eff H eino led the pack in the Formula One ra ce, fo llowed by a close mat ch between Curtis Maddox o n hi s new RG500 a n d H onda of G ardena / WLT Racing- sponsor ed J ohn Wells . After a really to ugh batt le, unfortu na tely, Well s was disq ualified for running th e wrong number o n h is bik e, a nd to make matter s even worse, h is $5000 motor blew o n the cool off lap. In the Formula Four race, Frank Call ini co , Gary Pender grass a n d Dylan Code put o n a dazzling ride as th ey diced for the lead . Afte r a very close race Code took the trop hy, follow ed by P endergrass. Speed ace Don Vesco showed up for the Vimage m atch with a Norton reputed to have been Mike H ail wood's, a nd went a t it with T ony Murphy, who wa s also o n a Norton. Vesco start ed almost last , but moved up ver y quickl y to tak e a cl ose second right beh ind Murphy. In Open Super Street , H arry Klinzm ann pushed Earl Rol off fo r m ost of th e race until gainin g the lead o n th e last lap to win it a nd give Ea rl h is first seco nd place in a long tim e. Rol off also fough t Jim Vree ke for th e 600cc Product ion h onors a nd finall y wa s a ble to put so me real esta te between them o n th e las t la p to win tha t o ne . Vreeke was in vo lved in a cen troversy later o n as h is 600cc Box Stoc k wi n was protes ted for a supposedly i ll ega l bike. But Vree ke stood by co n fide m ly as h is bike wa s to rn down a nd h e was found to be perfect ly legal a nd won the protest. A new fea ture wa s added to th e race p rogram - a p a rade lap fo r a ny a nd all spectators, with a motorcycle, who wanted to check o u t th e tr ack . Ea ch yea r the sea son o pe ne r has produced th e largest turnout in th e h istory o f t h e tightcornered night tr ack . This yea r, wi th a n as sist from th e weather and spring vaca ti o n from sc hoo l, 298 riders jam med into th e p it s. The track featu red th e sa me ba sic la yout as last season w ith reconstruct ed stu tterbumps, a n ew wh oo p -de -doe sectio n, a nd seve ra l whoops between the start a n d th e big jump. T he tr ack proved to be very unforgi ving. The best of the Pro ra ces turned o u t to be in th e 125cc class. In the first m o to a major pil e-up in the firs t corner produced a red flag. On the firs t a tte m p t at a restart three riders j umped th e gate. On the n ext restart th e holeshot went to Ken Dunlap, but h e had jumped th e ga te a secon d time a n d was put down a lap. Dunlap held a sli g h t lead ove r Kaw as aki 's Kyle Landrum a nd T eam Green 's Tracy Meeks. On th e fourth lap both Dunlap a nd Landrum went over the bars in sep a ra te in cidents in the whoop-de-docs. Meeks inherited the lead a n d held on. Steve Burdette, a Yamaha rider from th e east, moved into second wi th Dunl ap up aga in in third place. At th e fin ish it was Meeks, Burdette, Dunlap (do wn a lap), Rick Atkins a nd Doug Bower s. Atk ins to ok his R&D Suzuki to th e lead in th e secon d m oro over Meeks and Burdette. On th e seco nd lap Meek s cras he d a nd rem ounted a d istant eig h th. Chris H einrich took o ver third place with H onda- supported Aaron P ius in fo urth. At th e halfwa y point of th e m o to , Pitts slip ped by H einrich fo r th ird a n d Meek s mov ed u p to fifth , but was a good 10 seco n ds behind th e lead er s. What had been a _very tight race beca me even closer. At ki ns was h oldin g onto a sli m lea d with bo th Burdette a n d Pitts wi th in str iki ng di stance. With two laps left , the leader s pulled alon gside eac h o ther a n d wer e three a breas t going over th e big j u m p . Burdette had the lead for a seco nd as th e trio was flying through th e air. but o u t of the next turn Pius emerged with his Honda in the lead. Atkins managed to hold onto second a t th e finish with Burdette third. Atkins (3-2) wa s the big money winner. Burdette had a 2-3 for second, with Pitts third with a 5-1 score. The headline o n the sto ry should read, "Todd Peterson didn't win 250cc Pro at OCIR." That honor went to . Bry an Maloney with a 3-1 on his North County Honda. Peter son took second with a 2-2 and Mike Tripes, back on a Pro-Circuit Husky, took third i n the l7 -rider class.
