With Hames safe ly in th e lead , Ca ballero came up th rough th e Expert pack, event ua lly pa ssing Je ff J ohnso n, wh o had been in th ird , a n d a lmost ca tch ing seco nd pl ace m an Rod Su llivan . The seco nd hea t went to Mik e Garriso n, follow ed by Don H ow ar d a nd Scott Pod ergo is. Ch ris Ca n non an d Mike Inderbi tzen fought o ut fourth p lace with Cannon fin all y ge tt ing it an d becom in g first alternat e. J eff Johnson blew 'em off in th e sem i fo llowed by Sa l H offm an , Inder bit zen an d T aves, with Inderbitzen a lmos t ge tt ing H offman on the last turn of th e last lap. The Expert ma in fin a lly got away with Garrison, Sull ivan, Podergois an d Hames all on row thr ee! Su ll ivan had the early lead with Hames stuck in traffic a bou t fourth, bu t h e was moving. Mearl Ba rn ett arrived in turn one first a t the start of the Jun ior main bu t h e was n 't there lo ng. End of lap one it was San Ro man , La nd, Carro ll , Kla tt and McConnell. T h e leaders were all very close, and Bob Land was brea thing hard on San Roman . The two pu lled aw a y a bit , leaving Klatt, McC onnell and Carroll all goinghard un til Don Ro bert s shot past Carroll.
