The course was a l4-mile loop over natural terrain. which gave the riders a few mudholes and waterslides to conten d with. but other than that racing conditions were good in the morning and excellent in the afternoon. Hi -Point sponsored Eric "Iron Man " McKenna was the big winner o f the day ; he rode his Honda to an easy victory in the Open Expert class. After a poor start, McKenna had to work his way up through the pack, and was able to gain the lead before he completed his first lap . Close behind was Maico rider Randy Losh, sponsored by Euro Cycle. and Yamaha rider Charlie Smart. McKenna and Losh were the only Open Experts to complete a total of eight laps during the three hour race. Ken McKenze, a Honda rider, led the 250cc Expert class followed by Hi- Point sponsored Da ve Wood (Yam). Fi n ishing third and fourth were Sco tt Yarbrough and Larry Coleman, respectively. As usual the Vets and O ld Timers were out in force and fighting for top honors in their classes. Scott Davis showed the Vet Experts the way around. He was followed by Olde Scott Sinclair, Gary Vanderpool and Buzz P resser. In the.very competi tive Old Timer Expert class, j ack Cou lombe was p lan n ing o n holding that first place trophy. until. unfortunately, on the last lap his Maico bro ke. From there. KTM rider Curt McMahon took over to receive first with George Neilson second. Most riders agreed, when it was over. that they were a little tired when the three-hour race was cornpleted, _ This demanding race also had two women riders compete in the 200cc Novice class, both riding 125 Hondas. Tracy Gallo, 21, from Placerville. and jeanie Morgan, 20, from Yuba City. jeanie came away with third place in the 200cc Novice class. U nfortunately, Tracy had engine problems on the last lap and was unable to continuethe race. Sacramento County Sheriff Ro bbie Waters was a special guest on hand to start the Expert race and was impressed by h is first contact with off-road motorcyclists. All riders who finished th e race received-a nice finisher pin from the Pol ka Dots Club. Besides trophies, the top five Expert riders shared $750, and other riders received contingencies from Capital Coors, Hi-Point R acing . M PC, Hangtown Sports Cycle. Sun R iver Motorcycle.
