Teams are able to cha n ge riders at th eir di scretion which a Ilo ws them to wo rk out the kinks in th eir n ew bikes as weIl as in th eir bodies without too much stress on eith er. This year the format was cha nged from two onean d-o ne-ha lf-ho ur races to shootin g th e wh ol e works on o ne three-hour race for eac h gr o u p. The 100- I25cc class took off in th e morn ing led by the Rowdy BlasdeIl / Ben WiIIiams team. Ri ght beh ind came Holt/Tannock, Ri ck Boza rth r id ing a lo ne . MAR . 20 ...... ..... l-< Despite the soggy ground and a continual downpour, motocross die-hards trekked to San Hill Ranch on March 20 for th e s econd annual " W e e k e n d of Champions." The Expert draw wa s a guaranteed purse of $1000 by Budweiser and Contra Costa Honda. but with all classes fuIl the purse grew to $2000. It was on ly fitting th en that Contra Costa Honda riders J oey Schlag a nd J erome H eiberger took home first a n d seco nd place respectively in the Open Pro class. H eiberger led from the start in rnoto one followed by Jim EIl is with Schlag on hi s tail. Schlag passed EIlis early a nd the positions re m a ine d th e sa me . Schlag came back to dominat e rnoto two . The 250cc Pro class saw Schlag , Heiberger and EIli s go a t it aga in. Heiberger led th e field through th e mud with Ellis, Brett Cahors, Brad Emery. Bryan Wargo and Sch lag a ll in th e hunt. Wargo moved qu ickl y to third as Schlag bailed in a co rner. Ellis maneu vered around Heibe rger lat e in th e race to h old first. T he top thr ee repeated th e performance in moto two wi th Ellis ge tti n g th e h ol esh o t. Schlag passed Ellis a nd ran a way from th e pack. War go tried to pass Heiberger o n " Godzilla H ill's" upward side and managed a perfect loop-ou t for th e spectators an d a DNF for himself , . The I25cc Pro s had their p roblems as h alf th e field ju m ped th e ga te. leavin g th e latter half wi th gogg les full of mud. The on ly real adva ntage wa s 10 Ricky Ryan. wh o had clear sai li ng in moto one. Running wi th th e others in m ot o two wasn't quite so easy as R yan lo st it in a turn . Steve Vahl os, o ne of the latter starter s in mo to o ne. ca p itali zed on Ryan 's mi sfortune fo r a first pl ace. but th e overa ll went to Ed Minton with a very co ns istent ride. Shawn McC o"nn took seco nd honors a nd a new comer to th e area.
