As the race ran on, Pfeiffer stretched his lead over Stranger and Rob H all (Sa ddleba ck Suz ) positioned himself i n th ird with j oe Padilla (Ka w Escondido) in fourth. W ith the wh iie flag waving th e riders on for one more lap, Stranger too k th e lead with Hall and Pad ill a fighting for second. Stranger took th e overall victo ry and Padilla aced H all for second. The 250cc class ended lap o ne wi th Mike Baker (Orange County Cycle) holding fast .10 the overall position with Dale Donde1 (Lone Rider ) a nd Bri an Manley both looking for a cha nce to o verta ke the leader. Wh ile the lead ers rounded rheir second lap, Manley shot pa st Dondel a nd th en the race positions of the leaders remained the same. At th e checkered it was Baker, Manley a nd DondeI. The last race of the day was th e Open class, the big bik es, wa it ing th eir turn on the alread y worn cou rse. Sizzlin' Si xbery showed better as he led th e first lap. Mike Baker followed within in ches wa it ing for Sixbery to mak e one erro r. As the leaders completed their thi rd la p , Craig Adams led th e pack with Bak er not far beh ind. A short di stance back , in third and founh pl aces, Randy Norman. a new Can-Am rider, a nd Andre Butcher were ha ving a race of th eir own for the first few. laps. With th e founh lap comi ng to a n end, Adams (H o n) came around a lone and Norman, finally shaking But ch er , sta rted making up di stance on Adams. By th e last lap, as Adams near ed th e finish , a sho rtage of ga s brought him to an abrupt stop, As Adams pushed his bike determined to finish, Norman ga ined quickl y, but Adams resolved the problem in time to save a near los s a nd claimed th e overall victor y with Norman mere yards behind him. Brubaker banzais AFM Riverside RR ,.' 50 By Lori Tyson RIVERSIDE, CA, MAR . 20 No vice road racer Todd Brubaker dazzled the veterans as he held back Earl Roloff and Frank Mazur to take the 600cc Modified Production win a t th e Amer ican Federati on of Motorcyclists' first Riverside meet o f the year. A different track set-up was used utilizing the kink betw een turns six a nd seven , which had only a on ebike-w ide line through it. It was somewhat tricky 10 get 80 mo torcycles through at one time. But Brubaker had it down pa t. He a p peared Jaster through the new stuff than an yone and used it to his ad vantage to tak e th e Producti on win. In 600cc Stock Production, Palo Alto Yamaha 's Kirk Graves invaded Kawa saki tu rf and put on a really fine showing as he led th e first half of the ra-ce. Then he and Brubaker got into it and Brubaker bla zed on to tak e it. In th e very last lap Frank Mazur pulled a last ditch effort and slingsho t past Graves to steal seco nd place honors, leaving G raves a credita ble third. In 600cc Super Stree t Brubak er blew it. He ran o u t of gas o n th e last lap after dicing with Walt Niuo for the lead. jeff Tuuobene and j im Poet fought for third a nd , a fter Brubak er dropped out, went at it for seco nd with Poet taking it. Tuttobene finished quite well, co nsi derin g th e fact th at he hadn't shown up a t th e track until noon with his bike in p ieces in the back of his truck. Temple City Kawa saki 's Dav e Langford gave Mark Shelto n a real run for his money in Open Mod ified Production. Langford piloted a stock Lawson Replica against She lton' s GPzllOO, and , a lt ho ugh Langford had horrendous handling problems, he put up a ·good fight totake second right behind Shelton. In 750cc and Open Super Str eet Honda of Gardena's john Wells and Seaweed Kawasaki's Earl Rol off went at it , with another battle beh ind them between Denny Doheny, Dave Zirkl e and Pat Eag an . Rol orr pulled orr some wonderful pa sses to tak e th e trophy, Wells finish ed seco nd and Doheny th ird. H i-Desert Kawasaki's Mark Sh elIOn took an easy wi n in 750 and The RD Yamaha is alive and w ell in A FM racing. Open Stock Production followed by 750cc c1asser Roloff, who was second overall. The race to watch was between Open rider Kevin Dolan a nd 750cc classers Steve Biganski a nd Mike Krolick. Dolan ended up third a fter a hard ra ce (second Open class) tra iled by Biganski and then Krolick (who was fresh out of shoulder surgery 10 repair last year's crash damage). In Formula One race Harry Klinzmann led orr the line, bu t a fla t tire took him out of the race shon ly aft er. Ch ampion Moriwaki pilot Lee fl eming took over the lead and was unchallenged th e rem ainder of th e race. Dave Zirkle and Ibco's Rick Mitch ell went at it for second and Mitchell, a fter having had quite a long hiatus from racing, was victorious. Doug Tolan d , usu ally a 550 ace, borrowed a 650cc Kawasaki from Mark Sh ier for the Formula Two heat and fought Ken Cashen and Walt Niuo before tak ing th e trophy. Results SIDECARS: 1.
