Hooper is super at Clarks Branch MX By Suanne Light ROS EBURG, OR, MAR. 13 Clarks Branch raceway shook -to the tremors made by Larry Hooper, who once again topped the 250cc and O pen Pro class on his O 'Nea l/Yamaha-Honda of Ro seburg H on das, goi ng for a clean sweep wit h perfect I-I tallies. Honda rid er Rick Rise, rising to the top aga in after a lon g layoff , also tall ied a I-I in the largest cla ss of the day , the 125cc Juniors. T he weekend was forecas t 10 be another in a series of " washo uts," bu t instead tu rn ed out a pleasa nt surprise with the sun taki ng several peeks throug hout th e day. Brief rain loos ened up the loam y tu rf for the first Mini outing, co nsisting of 17 Intermed ia te and J un ior riders. Two lon e Experts started off by roosting th e pack in th e sta gge red stan . J eff Dail y (Eastside Kaw /MP Racing/Hi-Point/ Kaw) and fell ow T eam Gre en rider Curtis Dunnin gham led the field wit h a wall oping lead tha t wou ldn't be cha llen ged. Joel Sitts (G ra nts Pa ss Suz), Matt Ra mey (Herb's Cycle Yam ) and Cory Waite (H a n -Yam of Roseburg Han ) led th e Intermedia tes to the checkered flag, quite some distan ce behind Daily and Cunningham. MOIO two sa w the top five riders taking the exac t fini shes as in rnoto one. Jason Jan sen , Darren Da vis and Monty Spaulding were 1-2-3 in th e Junior portion, In Professional action , Randy Toreson led off the line in the first Open moto with Hooper and speedster Randy Amos trailing. Hooper didn 't trail for long and made th e pass to tak e o ver the lead. Hooper was a bi t surprised , as was Toreson , when Toreson took over on lap three to lead the race for five laps until Hooper decided once and for all 10 settl e the battle and take a stranglehold on first , taking the moto win over Toreson, Amos and Rodney Keller . Moto two saw Hooper take th e lead and look super on h is wa y 10 hi s first clean sweep of th e da y. It seems tha t H ooper has been unstop. pable since switchi ng to Honda's and, except for the first two races, has controlled the Winter Series. Toreson was second and Amos , third. Lange, Eaton, Moen connect at Woodland MX By Brian Barnes WOODLAND , WA, MAR. 15 Woodland Win ter T rack hosted a nother of its 1983 series races this weekend wit h Doug Lange (Yam hill Yam/Yam Suppor t! MX Fox/ Bel- Ray), Eric Eato n (Mai l Hus N.W.lHi-Point) and T om Moen (Sea ttle H on/Hon Support) winning th e 125, 250cc and Open Pro cla sses. The Open P ros had the pl easu re of racing in the day 's first mo ta and Moen sho t to the lead in front of J o hn Christian, J r. a nd Chris Moritz d uring th e first lap. Moen kep t the lead for la ps o ne and two, then Chr istian squeezed by and took over. Beh in d Christia n, Ron Sun, Ea ton and Steve Smit h had moved up q uickly a nd by lap four were ru nning in th e second, thi rd a nd fourth spo ts. Eat on was forced to retire on lap five with bik e probl em s. Su n moved into firs t wi th Sm ith and Moe n close behi nd o n la p six when Christian went down over the tunnel j ump. Sun seemed toget stronger every la p and cruised to th e first rnoto wi n. Smith started to tire d uring the fina l la ps and Christian, who ma de up a lo t of ground, too k second, with Sm ith third, Moen fourth a nd Bruce Irwin fifth . Moritz lead rn o to two for a few lap s bu t Moen and Smith flew past on lap three a nd dueled the remain der of the race wit h Moen ta king th e wi n and overal l. Sm ith was a close second, Irwin thi rd, Dan Fitch fourth and Mor itz fifth. In 125cc Pro, Doug Lange too k hi s seco nd consecu tive overall win in as many weeks by winning both rnotos toda y. The first rnoto he led a 1-2-3 Yamaha sweep with Jon Buyas second and Denny Fennel third. Two Suzuki mounts rounded out the top five; Marvin Waldo was fourth a nd Ralph Dunlap fifth. The second moto saw Lange and Waldo putting on a great ra ce for th e top spot. Waldo got past Lange for a couple of laps but the Yamhill Yamaha-rider powered back pas t a nd heldon for th e win.
