ORANG E, CA, MAR . 13 With the International track a t Saddlebac k bein g temporarily under water, th e Californ ia Racing Club's motocross was 38 si ted o n the back mot ocross track. The "Kin g ofSaddl eback," Jim Tarantin o , was o u t and · cha lked up yet another 250cc Pro class win. After his n u merous wins, T ar antino has th e rig ht to make thi s cla im . Tarantino , in royal style, advanced to th e lead in fir st mot o racing. Behind him were Scott Manning and Ron Turner. Manning is making a co me back a fter undergoing kn ee surgery, a nd Turner had a totally different look as he wa s aboa rd a KTM . T arantin o was shot down by Mann in g. wh o caugh t the leader on a turn before some double jumps. That was enough to infuriate th e " King," wh o ga in ed revenge by push ; ing Manning until swa p ped over a wh oop a nd lost th e lead . T ar antino was back o n top with Turner slid ing into seco nd a nd Mann in g tak in g th ird. Fina lmoto posit ionswere identical to the opening moto with T a rantino , T u rner a nd Manning in th e lead. T hey ended up in th at order , wh en the cash was awa rded , with Ma tt Tedder clai m ing the fourth pl ace money. The even in g sta rted off with the 250cc Money short track a nd it wa s Sha fter Yamaha 's Rod El y wh o got th e jump o n th e l l-rider field with H am es seco nd and Fontana Racing's J eff Joh nson third. On th e seco nd lap. Roger Thompson , on hi s Mike Mockb ee Kawa saki, moved by J ohnson to tak e over th ird. a nd o ne lap lat er Hames took over 'th e frontrunning slot and T hom pso n sta rted pressin g EIy. It took Thompsontwo laps before he found th e hole he wa s looking for a n d took over seco nd . Ros s Klatt had moved into fourth, bu t, three laps lat er, h e fell by the wa yside with mechanical p roblems. As th e laps wo u nd down and the checkered flag came out it was Hames. Thompson, Ely a n d J ohnson in the top four spots wi th Greg Nelson, Curtis Cannon, Randy Bird and Frank Wisham rounding out th e field . In th e Open Money short track, J eff J oh nso n was o ff fir st with T /R Sim pson -sponsored Tommy Walton secon d a nd H am es th ird. H am es took over first o n th e second lap , a nd Chris Ca n no n broke in to th e top th ree on th e third la p, ge tti ng by Wal ton. One la p later Ca n non disposed of J ohnson and was cha lle ng in g H ames. T he or der remai ned sta tus q uo until th e 12th lap when Rob Ely, wh o ha d been p ick ing h is way th rough traff ic, p u t the move on Johnson a nd, with two lap s to go, kept J ohnson a t bay to clai m thi rd behind Hames a nd Ca n no n . On th e seco n d lap , J ohnson had moved hi s H onda into third, and one lap later H ames had taken ove r th e lead. On th e fourth la p , Cannon went down in turn fou r ca usi n g th e red to come o u t. On th e restart it was H ames out in front with J ohnson seco nd and Don H oward on h is Ventura H arleyDavid son- sponsored Yam aha in third . H ow ard' s third was sh ort-lived as Roger Thompson moved by him o n th e fifth lap. T he red flag ca me ou t for th e secon d tim e on th e six th la p wh en Curtis Can non went dow n . On th e restart , H ames aga in got the nod with J ohnson secon d a nd Howard third. Again. How ard was for ced to take a back seat as Thompson moved arou nd him: On the eig h th lap , th e red flag agai n ca me o ut a nd the race was ca lle d with th e win going to Hames wi th J ohnson and Thompson in th e second a nd th ird spots. H ames a lso added th e Open Expert half mil e whe re h e was chased by a fired up Eddie Sa n Roman a nd Rex Ha iley. Th e 250cc Money half m ile had Rob Ely in th e dri vers seat with T hompso n second and Ross Kla tt thi rd . It took T hom pson th ree laps to set up Ely, bu t, wh en he went for it, he was rewarded with th e lead . Ely wasn 't a bo u t to ro ll ove r and pi a v dead, he came fig hti ng ba ck an d r ecla im ed th e lead two laps lat er. H e held on for two mor e laps befor e T hom pson agai n till ed the sca les in his favor and. for th e la st tim e, took over the lead . Ely had to be co nte nt to fo~l o w h im home. ORAN G E, CA, MAR . 5 After h avin g had rained all week, yo u ca n be sure th at Saddl eback had some mud. The back practi ce tra ck was used, a n d. even th ough as much mud as possibl e was scra ped o ff th e track, th ere was eno u gh mud left to cover bik es a nd bodies. T he re were two half-hour mot os consis ti ng o f 15 laps. They really gave the Old Timers a therapeutic. muddy workout. Master Marv Ol son plowed through all tha t gushy stuff on his Yamaha 250 a n d managed to take two firsts. Horst Lei tner was pretty good at the sa me game, and he zeroed in a second pl ace in mo ta one . Dennis Rosenberg zoomed in for th e secon d place in mota two. Junior Master George Spear ing really did some fast moving. He was good enough for two mota wins. Buzz Moell er did a lr ig h t with his two . second places. Ed Scheidler. of th e Expert class, brought ou t his new Yamaha 250 (wha t else) and it went fast; Iast : en o u gh fo r a first pl ace in both mot os . Asker Larnkjaer ga ve battle to Sche idler a nd didn' t let him h ave first th a t ea sil y, so Larnkj aer fin ish ed second. Am at eur Bob Alloy took off wi th th e h ol esh ot in mot a o ne a nd had a taste o f leading th e pack for two laps. T he n Ri chard Guthrie went on past h im a nd on for the win. Th e secon d mot a aga in saw Alloy o u t ig th e lead. bu t this tim e he managed to hold on to it a nd took a longa wai ted first pl ace. Guthrie was right th ere for second place. In th e Novice class, David Blodgett took th e leads in both motos and won th at so u g h t-fo r fir st place. Larry Escamilla came in · with two ni ce ' second p lace finishes. Results MASTERS: 1.
