lin - Plaster City - Searchlight - Sidewind Sutliff takes Coyote Derby Enduro ByT.S.Ooog c<') RED MOUNTAIN, CA, MAR. 6 00 Big Rob Sutliff made the haul down from Stoneyford, Calif., to the Mojave desert and came away with the overall win at .-. the Coyote Derby Enduro. Dro p p ing four points, Sutliff was consistent throughout the day on the way to victory. This was round three in the Golden State Enduro Championship and Sutliff is now leading the series. Seven riders dropped five points to finish just off the winning pace. Greg Newland aboard an XCSOO Husky grabbed his best finish in quite some, dropping five and netting secon d overall. Behind him ca me Tom Webb, followed by Jeff Henning. Eddie Diaz, Jeff Irwin, Mike Garrell and Mike Haney. This was the first time in many , many moons that the Chaparrals did not host a National enduro. But, as in the past the run proved to be tough and precise, gi ving the riders a mix of both timekeeping and decent special tests. Most of the top riders were on zero at the end of the first two loops. The final section decided the winner with good test sections and a couple of sneaky checks. Bo th Jon Miller and Dave Bertram were in contention for the overall • when early points zapped any chance of winning. Miller burnt two checks and still finished 10th overall. Webb rode the entire third loop without a front brake, as the cable had snapped. He was seen bulldogging his Honda down a co uple o f the more serious downhills. Sutliff just stuck 10 a smooth style, didn 't burn any checks, didn't brain-fade-our, riding his YZ490 to a smart, consistent win. O ther top riders p lagued wi th problems were Jeff He nning and J im Wilson. H en n in g rode the second loop with a malfunction ing front brake on his420 KT M a nd n arTOwly missed bu rnin g a check on th e th ird loo p. Jim Wilson, on the o ther hand, never got his big YZ to the starting line. The tra ns turned to mush and he borrowed an XR200 and rode the entire race. It was qu ite a sight seeing Wilson's huge frame wrapped around the packed-down little Honda. Top B rider for the day was Tim Crowder, who dropped 10 points. He edged out Steve Fry and Roland MeFadden, both of whom dropped II . Overall C went to James Janzen and the top Women rider was Patti Henning (Jeff's wife). On the whole, the riders enjoyed the event. Speed averages were fast enough so that no one got cold, most sweated. One sandwash behind the sand hills zapped more than one engine because of relentlessly deep, wet sand. The average wouldn 't allow you to Floor it, so th e bike had to be ridden between half and full throule. Quite a few riders seized their bikes here from the strain put on the motors. Nest stop for District 37 riders is the Hi Mounta in in April. Hopefully mother nature will be nice to the Pen gu ins and let them hol d their event withou t a ny pos tponrnents. • 0') MEllElER-WINS \ ' --+---+-__ .~LLJADEGA.BArriLO--+---I .TilE twINS STOCK CLJASS I ' I f on H·D XR1000 MmELER I I I I I \- +-- -+- ..f ne·new..JCR1000comes-wlfh.4loo l'es.but.whetJ' Harley-DavIdson went ra clng :they switched to the beSt.•• MEmLER MEn and ME99A Results OVERAll: 1.
