CA, MAR. 20 Husky teammates Dan Ashcraft and Dan Smith were at it again, battl ing for the lead of th e LOSl Coyot es M.e. Otis P. Pufen - 32 m ucker Mem or ial Race held a t Edwa rds Air For ce Base, a nd it was Ashcraft ta king the checkered Iirst. D-37 riders were gra teful 10 the cl u b, NASA a nd th e Ed wards AFB Desert Wh eels cl u b for givin g th em a chance to race in a new area. T he cou rse, which had 10 be cha nged two weeks before the race, consis ted of a 25-mile loop run four times. Wh en th e race started, it was Smith taking the lead with Ch ri s Crandall , o n a borrowed H onda , jurrtpi ng in beh ind him . Ashcraft was th ird with T ed H unnicutt fourth pa st the bomb. In th e Novi ce/Beginner race , Open Novice ace George Scott Jr. took the lead and would hold it for th e entire four laps. D. Kennedy, 250cc rider, was a close second.-R u n ning first C bik e was John Stoffel. In the Beginner race it was Open rider Tom Hanson lead ing thes e hard chargers. After one lap Smith was lead ing with Crandall and Ashcraft a close seco nd and th ird. Smith and Crandall were di cing hard, at tim es hi tt in g handl ebars. Hunnicutt was fourth over all after one lap. Phil Cloward was gi ving Chuck Stearns trouble today and these two ca me through at fifth and sixth. Richard Jackson was leading th e Open Vet cla ss at seventh. Rob Murray had co n tro l of the 250cc Amateur class, as did Ga ry Charters in the 250cc Sen ior Expert class . Starting 10 move up was Howard McCasland, who was in front . oft he 250cc Expert class . Tony Epperson was leading the Open Amateur class with Ron Shuler (Open Am ) right o n his tail. In the C bik e class, Tom Elias had another of hi s good rides going and was in the lead. Usi ng all his riding ability, Sm ith kept the lead for two laps until he hit a rock with his ankle, a nd the pain from that and from a fall the previou s week made him slow h is pace . Wh en this happened Ashcraft was right there 10 make his mo ve, having overtaken Crandall in th e pits. Crandall had moved up on Smith and th ese two pushed each other hard for th e last lap. At th e ch eckered it was Ash cra ft tak ing the overall win. Dan said hi s bik e ra n grea t a nd he felt good but sai d it wo uld ha ve been hard to do a no the r lap. Charters moved up 10 take fifth overall and first 250cc Senior. McCaslan d was six th a nd first 250cc Expert. T im Sinclair tried his best to get McCasla nd and it was close, bu t Sincla ir had 10 sett le for a close seventh a nd second 250cc. Jackson too k eig h th a nd his usu al firs t in th e Open Vets. At one poi nt J ackson . had ca ug h t Stearns, bu t his thrott le started stic king and caused him problem s for th e rest o f th e ra ce. Ninth was Clow ard and ro u ndi ng o u t th e top 10 was Bill Sa ltzma n . Fir st Nov ice was Geor ge Sco tt. On hi s C bike, Stoffel gave it hi s a ll to fin ish seco nd overall Novice. Webb takes two in a row with CRC Hobo 100 win By Mike Klinger L UCER N E VAL L EY, CA, MAR. 13 Wilh three California Racing Club en du ros and lWO wins under his bell, Tom Webb is in complete command . At the Hobo \00 Enduro , " Mr. Zero -it " put hi s 480 Honda ag-ain in the top position. In th e th ree-loop event, Webb sq ueezed by th e northern Cal ifornia hotshoe, David Bertra m by o nly four seco nds. Th e Hobo \00 is one o f th e Ca lifo rnia Golden State Ch ampionship endu ro series and Webb and Bertram are a t it aga in . In 1982. Webb a nd Bertram were a t eac h o ther 's th roats for th e entire year, with Webb winning the last even t and inching o u t Bert ram for th e cha m pions h ip . Loops one a nd three had the identical ro ut e for th e fir st 19.7 miles a nd the thi rd split off for 23.3 mor e mil es fo r a tot al o f 43 m iles. Loop o ne was not 100 d ifficu lt for two- and threeloopers but so me riders"had a cha llenging tim e staying on time. The second loop proved to be a handful for the two loop entra nts. T he overa ll win ne rs, J . Brya n Anderson (250cc C), a nd Donn ie Simone (.125cc B-1 6) lost 2.135 points over a fast30-m ile co urse. To the east of the pits, th e seco nd loo p encou ntered a tough special test. It head ed for Ca m p Rock Road in a very na rrow , twisty, tigh t, roc k-srewn ravin e. The speed average was 30 mph a nd a ll th e two loop riders lost a t least two minutes. Beh ind Anderso n and Simo ne was Lawrence Weber, who lost 2.143. Althoug h loop th ree ran the same 20 miles as d id loo p one a t th e begin ning, th e spe eds were much faster. T he tra il led directl y for the m icro wave towers up the steep, rocky course. One section th at stumped everyone was a 12 mph sandwash that a tria ls bi ke m ight have had trou ble ma neuvering. O u t o f the " slow-down " san dwas h a nd the co urse led down a n o ld mi ni ng road straight down a nd roc ky. It then pi cked up to 42 mph for .7 mil e, which was the spe cia l test. Even riders like AI Bak er a nd J erry Co u nts had their p ro blems wit h the section . Behind Webb and Bertram was SCOll Sampson, 24 seco nd s off of Webb's pa ce. Ea stern er Bill Berreth a nd Ra nd y Dau ghert y made up the top five and th e o n ly riders losi ng o nly two points. Top B hon ors went to Randy Pearson , who rides in th e 200cc B class. ' The race was run \0 times around a n IS-m ile course, wi th a two- wave sta n going one minu te apart . At th e beginni ng o f the race, Sa nders was d icin g for the lead wi th Husky's Scot H a rden. H ard en pulled a head, but his lea d was short-lived when he came up wit h mecha nical prob lems; the seco nd suc h occ urence in the last four races . With H a rden o ut , Sa nders and Rob in so n never relinqu ish ed their lead , tra di ng eac h lap. T he Terry Strauwa ld/ Ra ndy Byers and Gordon Clar k/ Jim SCali tea ms fough t for th e 250cc Expe rt class lead with Stra u wa ld o ne m inute a head wh en he hi t some thi ng a nd bail ed off hard. Ten minu tes had gone do wn the tube, a nd although th ey mad e up five, th ey could not ca tch th e 125cc Ex pe rt class wi n ners, Bob Bell a nd Kirk H ester , who finis hed fo u rth overall. Experts Bill Rea m s and Gary Ba iley led the Vets class all the way . " I got o ff o nce," said Ba iley, " Bu t I kn ew Reams would ki ll me if I didn 't gel in , so I got back o n and booked it." The. Monte Lee/ Joh n Peterson and Cla ude Ma ynard/Donnie Kilgore teams bat rled for second in th e class for ni ne la p s. "We were \00 feet a part more tha n once, bu t we couldn't get by," rela ted May nard lat er. "T hen I lost m y cl u tch going into th e pit. I took Kilgor e's 500 Husky (wha t a ridel) and passed Peterson about eig ht miles from home check. " Mort Ma ynard and J eff Bennett na iled down th e 250cc Amat eur win, in spi te o f Bennett cras hing \00 yar ds off the sta rt . "T he bik e didn 't even die," sai d Bennett.
