" Peggy and I were talk ing abo ut th at just the o ther night, " he says, " In one stretch there, betw een the National s and running the Six Days, I was home eigh t da ys o u t of 36." Peggy says, "Some times he even gets calls at hom e. It' s never o ver, but he enj oys the racing, and hi s job, so much. We just hav e to work with it." One way o f " wor ki ng with it " involves bowling together in a mixed league one night a week, " H usky gave me a bowling ball for finishing second last year," he says. Grinning, he adds. " Whe n I was on the high school track team," he says, " I had a coach who wa s forever trying to get me to say how high I'd go in the pole vault. One weekend he wouldn 't let me be in the track meet, because I refused to write something down. He said if I wasn 't willing to commit to a goal, then I couldn 't be serious about the team . " Even now it' s the sam e. After I won my sixth National, I had a reporter ask me if I had th e title locked up. I told him that it looked pretty good, but I wouldn't say I had th e title until the last race was over , the last score was counted , and they handed me that award, T hen he said, 'A ll vou need is eight more to beat Dick 's reCord.' And I said. ' Be serious. I hav en 't even won my first o ne yet.' "All I can say now is what I always said to my track coach. I told him that I just go o ut every tim e and do the very best I can ," And when it's T err y Cu n ning ham doing (he talk ing. tha t's saying a lot.e
