Aldana was a board th e Paul Dahmen /Daytona Budweiser TZ750 entry. Roberts was genuinely overjoyed at winning. On th e wh ite flag lap, he flashed the V-for-victory sign to corner workers. On the cool-off lap, Roberts pulled wh eelies in the infield, waved to the fans and accepted their cheers in return . It was a very popular victory and Roberts hedged when ask ed if this was really his last racing appearance at Daytona. Roberts ran the 52 laps at an average speed of 110.926 mph to set a new Daytona 200 record as last year's winner, Graeme Crosby, had his 109.103 mark bounced from the record books. The heartbreak story of the event had to be that of Thad Wolff. He was running in fourth on the Team Escargot Suzuki 1000cc four-stroke on lap 48 of the 52 lap race when the engine gave up. Wolff coasted to a stop in the infield and sat pounding the gas lank in frustration. Frustration was also the word in the Honda pits as Ron Haslam (blown engine), Freddie Spencer (transmission troubles), and Mike Baldwin (clutch problems) all DNF to effectively blunt three tines of Honda's four pronged attack at ending Yarnaha 's domination of the Daytona 200 which dates from 1972. Qualifying Heavy rains on Monday of Cycle Week completely washed out an y practice sessions. Things cleared a bit on Tuesday and most riders got in a bit of track time. The biggest speculation in the pits was about the engine size of the factory team Yamahas. "We can't run them in a GP," was Yamaha's Kel Carruthers reply to the question of displacemen t. Guesses ranged up to 680cc, although 640cc was the figure most mentioned. The 500cc GP mount s of H onda's Spencer and Haslam also came into discussion, but rel iable sources indicated that 540cc was th e largest th ey could go and that would have required special castings to make the heads . As the y did last year, Honda kept everyth ing under wraps unless it wa s on the track. . This was to be th e first 200 since 1979 in 'which th e Yamaha TZ750 would run wi thou t carbure tor intake rest rictors. A lot of last year's Superbi ke entries turned up in Formula O ne clo th ing as the cha nge in displacement in th e Superbike class from 1,025cc to 750cc left owners with a park it or race in Formula One choice. Dunlop, Goodyear a nd Michelin were all present wi th tires , with Dunlop supporting only Roberts and Lawson . Mike Baldwin , of Honda, was 011 Good year ; wh ile the rest of the Honda factory bikes were Mich elin shod. Wes Cooley, Kawasaki 's only rider in Formula One, was using Goodyear. Everyo ne put on their race face for th e first qualifying session fo r th e 80 rider field oil Thursda y. The qualifying was divided into three 40·minute practice seg men ts with each rider req uired to run a t least five laps in hi s assigned sessio n . The rider's fastest lap counted. The 20 fastest riders were guaranteed their positions in the first four rows of the grid. Roberts and Lawson were in the first segment and stayed together . f. ~~' .... ~ _ " ' • • • _. ... . ' ., Boyesen • give you bolt-on borseoOWl~. Just ask the factories, or any top-name racer. Boyesen's revolutionary dual-stage reed design delivers more usable powerthan stock. And it's taking the motocross world by storm. Youroriginal one-stage reed operates most effectively only within a narrow RPM range. For good performance at low RPM, you need a soft reed that can open easily. But at high RPM, you need a rigid reed that can close quickly", No one-stage reed can do both. That's why your original reed-and all one-stage reeds-are merely .' a compromise. Boyesen Racing Reeds feature dual action. One soft reed on top of one firm, flow-through reed gives you a wide range of effective intake control, plus increased intake velocity". Your original reeds can't possibly duplicate that performance. ..and that's the difference. You can easily remove the reed block, between cylin"der and carburetor, and replace the original one-stage reeds. It's a minor replacement that's guaranteed to make a major iml?rovement in your bike's performance. And Boyesen Racing Reeds won't destroy an engine the way broken metal reeds do.
