Peggy doesn 't travel to many o f the lo ng-dis ta nce races with Terry, bu t she an d Carrie a ttend all th e local races, along with Terry's parents a nd sisters. Terry says, "Mydad still goes with me every cha nce he gets . This year he went to J ack P in e a nd Stone Mounta in - I won the overa ll at bot h . He wa nted go go to the Black Coa l, but we'd already p lan ned to go salmon fish in g in Michiga n, an d h e'd ki nd o f saved h is mon ey for that." T he fish in g trip is a n annual ou ting for the men in the Cun ni ngham fam ily, a nd T erry says, "We always have a great time." . After Terry fin ish ed o n Gold in h is rookie assau lt o n the ISD E's, Ma ico agreed to improve hi s sup port progra m for 1980. It so u nded good: two bikes, ' pa rts, a nd ex pe nse s, but the weeks went by wit h Terry a nd Ma ico unable to reach a n agreem ent on signing th e co ntract. H e says, "It got within -a couple of weeks of , Stone Mountain a nd I still didn 't have a bi ke. Greg Davis was the East Coast sales rep for H us ky then - he ro de th e Six Da ys in Germany a few years back. H e .told me , ' We can giv e you a bi ke; and th at 's it,' And I said, 'O kay.T'Il take it. " : He went to Stone Mountain wi th Bob Popiel, th en H usky's East Coast service rep, now th eir national service rep. Theweather was co ld a nd nast y"J us t what'I grew up riding," T erry says-and h e finished second behind Dick Burleson, In March ; he rode th e Ten nessee ' Qualifier , and when he retu rned to Athens , he says; " I was o ut of a job. I was working a t a ga rage then ,d o in g tune- ups, fro nt en d a lignments -stuff like tha t." , Pop iel had hinted that H usky migh t have a n opening in the ir Col um bus, O hio, service,offi ce, so Terry ga ve h im a call. . ,' T hey set upan appoint ment for an interview; It went well, a nd a few days later, Terry Sta rted com muting from Athens to Co lu mbus five days a week . " O ne hundr ed fo rty-eight mi les aday, a n hour a nd ten m inu tes eac h way, ' T e rry says. "Un lessyou get picked u p , a nd then it's a litt le lon ger." . " ' , 1981 brought that bittersweet seco nd place fini sh in the National s, a nd yet another Gold ISDE medal, this tim e in Italy. " I was ,third Am erican .beh ind Stac)' a nd Roeseler," h e says, "and th is year I was seco nd Am erican behind Edd ie Lojak." In 1982 he fini shed o n Silver for th e' first tim e, a d isappOintment'that was as unex pected as it was crus hing whe n he heard the fin al results. Terry exp lains. it this way: "T hey said I didn't finish m y five laps on the mot ocr oss track (the last special lest o n the sixt~ da y) in u nder 20 minutes. I was sure I di d, beca use I crossed the finish line o n the back wheel of the MZ rider they said made it by eig ht seconds . T he sam e 'thin g ,hap pened to Mark H yde. By the time 'they brought th e books in th at ' n ig ht, it was around . 10:110, and they said it was too lat e to d o anything about it." , His dual duties as racer a nd service rep for H usq va rn a Eas t , keep Cun- , ningha m very ' busy.
