This year look s like th e best ever with riders in a ll clas ses com peting on th e tough cou rse a t Berthoud. T he 125cc Expert cla ss provided the biggest th rills of the da y when Albert Firestine che wed up the cou rse with his typi cal super form a nd aggressive styIe. Firestin e ca rries th e number one plate in Colorad o thi s yea r and it will be rough gelling it a way from him. When he gets the holeshot he is hard to catch , riding one of the faste st bike s in th e stat e. But rig h t behind him all da y. two more fast I25cc riders kep t Firestine honest . Paul Lindsay and Sta cy Cook pushed on eac h turn and every jump and Firestin e felt the pressure all da y. These three 'crossers will have man y more races as exci ti ng as ' this first cha llenge of th e you ng season. Earl ier in th e da y the Mini Ex pert s put on quite a show. Steve Kyle. one of th e hardest riding Expert s in th e Min i class. found th e gr oove and stayed ou t front in both of his rnotos. Steve threw roo ster tails a ll day in the powdered dirt as he ran to th e chec kered flag ahead o f Kip Sa ndil l a nd Derek Brown. The Open Experts burned up a li ttle track in the afternoo n 100 , wi th Mike Knupp ta king both motos for a n overa ll win in the dust of th e Berth oud track . Mike stayed on the ga s as he flew over th e p yramid jump like he had wings. Knupp looked over his sho ulder at Randy Warren and Tim Buchl i as the se two great battlers tried 10 ca tch him on each turn. There will be more meetings of the se three top Open riders. Logston returns, takes Las Cruces GNC qualifier By Lynda Torrez LAS CR UCES, NM , JAN. 23 , Former Team Green rider Scott Logston, after having hung up his leathers to devote full time to his new Scott's Kawasaki bu siness, returned to ac tio n with two new KXs a t th e Las Cruces MX Park Grand Nat ional Ch ampionship qualifier. Th e beg inning o f Logston's day long domination was the l25 cc Pro class. The fir st moto was stop ped a fter a lap a nd .a half becaus e the a m bu la nce crew was having a difficult tim e ge ll ing 10 a downed rider. It was decided to stagger start the riders in the order in whi ch they com p leted th e last lap. T hey fini shed in th e order they sta rted, wi th Logston a com forta ble first fo llowed by Midland/Odessa riders Mike La wso n a nd Joh n Laney and EI Paso 's Shaun Perrero , All three rod e Hondas. Logston p ulled th e hol esh ot in th e second rnoro as well and soon stretched o ut a 30-second lead . Perrero was second wi th Lawson third. They had a good battle unt il Lawson 's bike went sou th , giving th ird 10 Laney. The 250cc Pro event was a lso a Logston sho w, hol eshot to che ckered flag each tim e o u t. Perrero, John Brown (Ya m), Derek Van Wart (Kaw) and Bru ce Wollard (Suz) all battled for seco nd a t on e time or a noth er, and when die overall results were sorted out, Perrer o took th e runner-up spot over Brown. The Open Pro cla ss was a two-man ra ce for the lead between Bobby Nichols (Suz) a rid Ryan Armitage (KT M). Armitage held a slim lead on Ni ch ol s through j us t about a ll o f the fir st mot o , but Ni ch ol s slipped by in th e fin al corner to tak e the win. On th e final moto, Ni chols led all the wa y to take th e win. .
