Geary Street Albany, OR 97321 Two Wheel Horse, The Small Motorcycle Shop, is a book about a real motorcycle shop in Albany, OR, and is written by the shop's owner/manager Charlie Stoakes. The title of the book, though vague, is accurate and appropriate because the book is basically about the author's motorcycle shop. Both the title and the content are vague because words lie in a haze between the extremes of a chronicle and a how-to manual. The book is much like a chronicle and starts out with an introduction on the author and the history of his nine-year-old shop. Throughout the book, the au thor relates his personal experiences to the how-to material and in several instances repeats the same stories. This no t only becomes annoying to the reader, but the author also breaks the flow frequent ly to cite his experiences from his previous employment. This is apparently in an attempt to build credibility, but it achieves the opposite effeet as it breaks up the story line and makes the reader wonder why the author never stayed with anyone project for very long , and how anyone cou ld be an expert at so many different things. The final touch to this aspect of the book comes in the closing pages when the author lets the reader in on the secret that his shop is for sale . When the reader is not reliving the author's experiences, the Two Wheel Horse does seem a little like a how-to manual. The table of contents supports this and the first section reads like a how-to manual as the author describes the various types of shops: systems, custom, racing and enthusiast . Unfortunately, the author singles out the enthusiast shop as the only type of shop to run and maintains a sa les-pitch-type slant in his writing during the rest of the book -in favor of the way he runs his business. This lack of objectivity eventually becomes annoying and also questions the credibility of the author. We started reading the Two Wheel Horse with an objective and curious attitude and found the personal experiences related interesting in the beginning; but finishing the book was painful. The book has a host of good material in it, bu t it is muddled in the maze between the how-to book and the personal chronicle. The organization is poor, the book is wordy and while the author may be sincere, he is .hardly objective. Buy this book to put yourself asleep at night or to last out a long winter.
